This story bums me out because I'm a Saints fan. I remember when I was living in New Orleans how energized the city was in the late 80's as the Saints started becoming a good team under Mora. Automatically Appended Next Post: Reading further down, it looks like the Red skins had some bounty action happening.

This is nothing new.
The reacion by many present and former players confirms this has always existed in one form or another to some degree.
The only reason the commissioner will have to take such a strong stance on it is two-fold:
1. PR: To avoid being cast as a hypocrit because he has made such a stink about head shots and concussions as of late
2. Becuase to do otherwise undermines his push for an 18 game season

You know, someone should just abolish the rules, throw around some nuclear waste, and we can have the Mutant Leagues.
Much better than what we have now.

Does it have to be PR? I don't know the league like some of
you, but can it not be that he's shifting his stance because he
believes that the danger to the players is real and immoral?
Maybe it was something he didn't believe before?
Again, I don't know the league, but this story is fascinating.

football has always had this sort of undercurrent, but it isn't talked about publicly.
All the way down to high school football and younger where players can earn helmet stickers for hard hits. Players want to hit hard and eliminate the other guy irregardless of bounty. It is the culture of the game.
His concern isn't so much to protect players for their own sake, but to protect his arguement for a switch to an 18 game season from 16. Players feel the game is too demanding and too hard on them physically to play 18 games, but the league wants it because it is millions in extra revenue. So anything they can do to assure the players they are making 18 games viable.
Thus the big push in recent times to crack down on dangerous tackles, the spotlight on concussions, and now the OTT reaction he will have to this.
Again, I don't know the league, but this story is fascinating.

In high school we had a drill called "Ready go!"
The drill consisted of one player running at full speed on a simulated slant, while another players took an angle to shoot him out (dive through his shins). The players being tackled were invariably 2nd or 3rd string, and if they tried to avoid the hit they had to do some kind of cardio as punishment.
Brutal, and unnecessary because the same drill can be done with a bag.
That said, while bounty is an issue in the NFL and NCAA, its much worse at the HS level where players are more easily manipulated, and coaches are worse. A parallel issue is encouraging ridiculous degrees of weight gain.

Player safety is a factor, though. You don't want multi-million dollar athletes regularly sitting seasons out.

Especially the multi-million dollar stars who are the "faces" of the League like QBs, Running Bakcs, and Wide Receivers.
I can't wait until we just get rid of the pretense and go back to this:

I donn't think those two players are wearing regulation NFL equipment, and by that I mean I don't see any Nike swooshes on them.
