How much is your budget monetary wise and points wise? Perhaps start out with a 500pt army and go from there.

Ebay, and go for an rmy which is not flavour of the month. Currently Eldar are pretty cheap I noticed and marine stuff can always be picked up cheaply if you decide to bite the bullet and go with them for budgets sake to begin getting games in.

Yeah go buy some Eldar, Tau or Chaos....

All are usually considered sub par in 40k right now and will fore sure be traded on Ebay...

You might want to snag as much chaos as possible since it is getting a new codex soon and will again return to its former glory as a must have / must play army....

Ebay! I buy all my GW stuff from there these days apart from paints.

Note that stuff from flavour of the month armies starts to show up about three months after the initial release, when people realise they're not really going to paint and model all their impulse buys.

I bought a job lot of BNIB Necron stuff recently, not because I wanted it, but because it was ridiculously cheap. Made a decent proft selling the boxes separately

Use ebay, check it every night and be very patient. Easy as that.

If your willing to strip models and start over, you can pick stuff up super cheap.

I say go necron. There's a new battleforce out that's fairly affordable and you can paint them and have them look good with a limited palette.

£60 a month will go pretty far. In a few months you'd have a good sized army for any faction and if you're disciplined about it, it could even be painted!

I recommend picking the army that most appeals to you in terms of it's look and background. No matter how affordable an army is, it's not going to be fun if you don't like the army.

Once you pick an army or two that you like the look of, take a look at the playing style (assulty, shooty, mixed, hordes, elite, etc.) to make sure it lines up with the way you would like to play. It shouldn't be that hard to find an army that fits your playstyle and seems "cool" to you.

Then put together a list of the units you need (lots of folks here at dakka can give you advice) and -as others have mentioned- start watching ebay, bartertown, and the Dakka swap shop.

Lastly, try to only buy whats on your list, otherwise you could end up spending more money buying units you won't use.

Best of luck and welcome to the hobby.

^^ This.

I got most of my Tyranid army half-price on eBay. The only models I had to buy at retail were the brand new releases like the Trygon. I got them from Maelstrom.

Tau would be a good buy on eBay because there haven't been any new models released for four or five years. Everything should be available.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

That is enough money to buy a unit a month and gives you time to paint it up before you buy your next unit. Just be disciplined and you will have an army in no time.

60 pounds a month to work with isnt that much of a restriction.... Thats more than I have to work with and I have a lot of shtuff.
Id go with what other people have said here. Buy the codex of your choice, plan out a list. confer with others (Although imho not on forums, a lot of list topic readers seem to think its only good when its what they want not you) perhaps talk to another player of the army in a games workshop/general hobby centre. Try not to ask a games workshop guy, mor eoften then not they dont actually help with the list that much, they usually say something along the lines of "You should have more of this £400 pound unit, its fantastic! Oh dont take £10 unit, its bad"
Once your list is built, go on to buying minis. Once a month buy a unit or two and paint them. Then next time buy another, then another. Then hey, what do you know! its all painted.

I'd probably go chaos.

Keep in mind any marine model you find can be converted!

Buying terribly painted models for cheaper is the way to go, cleaning their paint off at home is easy.

The first month, you could buy all your paints and hobby supplies and a basic, small box of something to practice with. Just don't buy everything from GW - most hobby stuff is cheaper elsewhere. In the UK, it can all be done in a quick whizz round the typical town centre....

- Get the paints and models from GW.
- Get glue, spray primer and basing material (flock) from Modelzone.
- Get side cutters/clippers from B&Q or Maplin
- Get brushes from an art store.

If you like what you paint in your first month, then, as people have said, go on eBay. For £60 you could probably get someone's old army, especially if it's not flavour of the month.

It depends if you want the latest edition, untouched models, or if you just want something that works. I go out of my way to collect earlier editions of models, as I like my armies to look unique.

As people have said, Eldar, Tau and Chaos are pretty cheap to pick up. Also, people throwing away Marine armies are ten a penny on eBay, which gives you about five more options, since you can paint them as SM, BA, BT, SW or DA. And of course, the original Dark Eldar models are REALLY easy to get hold of...

Honestly, get yourself the necron battle force, you can find it pretty cheap online, and then you can convert GW models and stuff from all the left over bitz, honestly a battle force and overlord and you have an army already.

One can play an Ork Speed Freak list relatively cheaply by using non-GW models.

I'm currently converting a KV-2 into a Battlewagon alongside an S35 Somua as a Looted Wagon; neither model cost me more than £13 versus £40 for a GW Battlewagon and £30 for a Leman Russ. But I don't know how much I might fork out on incidental expenses, mind.

If you want to make Orks super cheap; buy AoBR and convince a friend to do the same. Get him to collect the Space Marines, give him all yours from the box in exchange for his; voila, you now own ten Nobz, two Warbosses, forty Ork Boyz and eight Deffkoptaz. Get a Battleforce on top of that and what more could you want?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, if you're a Brit, get your stuff from Dark Sphere or Wayland Games, the former has 25% off all GW (I think?) versus Wayland's 15%, though Wayland stocks more stuff, I also get my magnets from them.

Also I would advise that while GW foundation and washes have my approval, look at coat d'arms and vallejo for non high opacity and washes, you get more ml per £ . For brushes Rosemary & co got pointed out as a good place in the painting and modelling forum and also army painter brushes are really good, the latter again ebay. I actually have a trader saved who I get all my tools etc from as they have great service and usually free P&P

Do you have Craigslist in England?

Here in Vancouver, Canada, it seems like people just can't even give away poorly painted Tyranids. (and acetone-free nail polish remover will strip paint very well without harming the models)

60 GBP a month can be pretty healthy budget for wargaming. Try Dakka's own Swap Shop or eBay, and if those won't do, then get new stuff from a discounted retailer like Maelstrom or Amazon.

£60 a month is a good budget.

if i was you i would follow this plan

month 1 - buy brushes / paints / tools and 1 troop choice
for the rest of the month read and practice.
month 2 - battle force
should take you 1 month to build and paint
month 3 - vehicles + more paints..

hope this helps

Orks can be pretty reasonable too if you buy Assault on Black Reach models off eBay.
