Just thought I'd give you fine folks a heads up I have completed the 3 part tutorial on scratch building a Rhino. Eventually the piece will be completely modular and will allow for switching to weapon load outs to represent Razorbacks or Predators.

Finished Rhino-

Looks pretty good, however I don’t think I would have the patience (or time) to build one.

Happy to assist, AtariAssassin. May your scratch building efforts go well!

Thanks Ma55ter_fett. I'll be honest, when I started doing this I never thought the end results would turn out as well as they did.

What brand resin do you use? Also we're can you get the resin and instamold?

The InstaMold I got from Cool Mini or Not's store and the resin I use is Alumilite's low viscosity super light liquid casting plastic which I got from Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby often has a coupon for 40% off one item which helps to bring the cost way down on the resin.

Way better than my own scratch built Rhino... though, I had no patterns xD

I'll use your method in the future.

@kcwm- Yup, you found me! Hopefully you never find my pot of gold

@Dark- Thanks! I worked hard making the patterns, so it's nice to hear y'all like 'em. As soon as my little painting diversion is finished I'll continue with the Predator/Razorback weapon switch upgrades.

I can't really find 3/8" posterboard and that seems really thick to me. Do you mean 3/16"? If not, do you think anything "bad" will happen by doubling up (gluing two pieces back to back) on it?

Call me a nay sayer, but duplicating GW's parts, doesn't make it scratchbuilt.

@jms40k- Good god, yes, 3/16". Oof! ::Goes to fix it NOW::

@Rimmy- Well, I suppose I could build the hatches, wheels, and tank treads from scratch, but tbh I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. Just building the side exhaust ports is incredibly time consuming.

Honestly I think if you can use shortcuts to help with the build, it is fine.. If 90% of the model is hand made, and the other 10% from other lines or what ever.. Then why complain about it, the OP gave a great tutorial on how to build something.. As far as i am concerned its scratchbuilt, yes he could have built all the parts, but he still did a hell of a job.. Ork players get away with "scratchbuilding" anything even if we use a kit bash..

Heh, I can accept that some people have different ideas on what constitutes a scratch build, really.

WAIT! wait! Do I really need Baneblade return rollers and Landraider tracks to do this meow?

I think you just sold me on instamold. The quality of your reproductions is excellent.

Any painted pictures?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Landraider tracks would be far too wide. The tutorial also allows for a less detailed version which uses a simple plasticard strip etched to simulate tracks and the wheel rollers can be made using circles cut from the posterboard.

Of this particular model, no, but of an earlier version which I based it off of I have a Predator picture and Razorback picture in my gallery on this site where they are fully painted. Those are scratch built as well (and I plan to add weapon tutorials for easily switching from the Rhino to Razorbacks and Predators).

I just looked through your gallery. Great job on making excellent looking stuff by hand. I really like the PzII style offset gun on the mk1 predator turret.

Sadly I don't, though I've been considering turning the templates into PDF's (so they don't shrink/enlarge for some reason). I'd like to keep the tutorials themselves on the site to encourage traffic though.

Shoot man, make a tut on how to do that old school Land Raider. Im pretty interested in that one. Mainly as Id like to make an Orkified one, but I cant see spending near $100 on an original, and then hacking it into pieces, I think Id be murdered for that

krisken does some awesome work. If you're duplicating GW parts by way of molding and greenstuff/resin/whatever, then I'd consider that scratch built. Although I'm new to the WH40k world, it doesn't have to be MacGuyvered together with some twine and a bobby pin to be considered scratch built.

I out with in both 40k and WHFB.

I've built 3 of these! Unfortunately, I then got out of CSM, so they're now the bases of my Looted Tanks! They still work great!
