Can a royal court with what ever hq being used join with an other unit? Like an over lord 3 crypt teks, and a lord join with a unit of warriors?

One from each royal court can join a unit of warriors... Not the entire court.
But you could split the entire court out and everyone join a different unit of warriors.

One member of each court is allowed, through a special rule, to join another unit
They are NOT ICs, meaning that collectively they cannot join another unit - only an IC can join them.

What about just taking 5 Necron Lords and making them a unit all on their own?

Sure - whatever you don't split off to "lead" other units stays as the royal court unit...

But wouldn't it be the lord joining the unit as a IP and the royal court are tagging along so to speak?
I guess I should rephrase the question.
Can a Overlord with a royal court join an other unit? Like the example I previously stated.

A Royal Court is a separate unit from the Overlord. There is no requirement for the Overlord to remain with the Royal Court, therefore the Overlord can join whatever unit he wants, while which ever members of the Royal Court are not sent to join squads remain a unit of their own, separate from the Overlord and any other units.

If you mean can the Royal Court with a joined Overlord join another unit, then no. The models in the Court do not have the IC rule. If you mean since you have an Overlord and the Royal Court he lets you take can the Overlord by himself join another unit then yes.

No, as I previously stated.
They are not ICs, therefore have NO PERMISSION outside of their special rule to join other units.

The Royal Court is not a retinue and are not required to "tag along" with the Overlord at all. Since the Overlord is the only IC in the group, only he can join other units outside of the Royal Court splitting off.
If they all stay together you get a separate unit.

The codex is very clear how the court works and can be allocated to squads and the FAQ allows for two separate courts to both allocate a single model from each of them to a single squad.
The real question should be is the royal court a kill point if they stay together? What if they all split up to lead squads?

As has been pointed out to me, only the Royal Court that stays together will count as a kill point.

You get kill points based on units deployed, not on what you have in your army list.
