Subject: FoW noob What book should I have with these miniatures?

My cousin and I are VERY new to FoW. He plays Germans and I play British Para. Here are the models he has, what I was wondering is what book he should have to be able to use these pieces.
5x King Tiger
1x Panther D
1x Flame wagon
1x Artillery battery
As well as a mortar team and volksgrenadier squad or 2

Well, you definitely need late war for the King Tigers, so I would say Grey Wolf, as it is the compilation of the German forces on the Eastern Front in late war.
Other than the King Tigers, the Panther D can probably be taken as a support choice, I don't know what a "flame wagon" is, and one artillery battery (if you mean a single gun) is useless without 3 others and assorted teams.
I don't think you can make an army using mainly King Tigers, though, as they are very expensive (points wise) and are probably only in support choice slots. I doubt that more than 3 can even be used in a single army.

My guess is that it's one of these:
That's a fairly eclectic army you have there. The King Tigers will make a nice Schwere panzer list with just a few extra models. Five king tigers come to about 1800 points.
The artillery and volksgrenadiers would probably make the start of a decent grenadier force. The Panther and the flame wagon can be used in panzergrenadier forces in Grey Wolf. It's hard to say without more details about the volksgrenadiers and the flame wagon.

Or Earth & Steel for the Western Front since you're playing British.

I would buy Fortress Europe for your Germans,At least if you use Fortress Europe your German player can have Air Support.
For your British i would get D-day minus one or A bridge to far.
Also starting out i would not worry about using a Proper list until you know that you have the game mechanics down.Just make sure the points are even.
Also with the Earth and Steel and Turning tide books are kinda expensive, and are kinda outdated with the new edition. You can buy the other books on ebay fairly cheap.
Then pick up the others when updated.

You have a 1730 pt 501st King tiger list! (River of Heros) Congrats!
You could run 4 of them at 1500 if you picked up an HS129.

I wouldn't reccomend any book other than Earth and Steel, Cassino or Grey Wolf for the Germans since thay're the only books with updated points costs. If you don't have a V3 rulebook I would reccomend picking up the hardback rulebook instead (for now) as it will contain basic army lists for the 'big four' countries. IIRC it's out some time this month.
I'd only reccomend Fortress Europe (or Festung Europa) if you can get them very cheap.

I hate to be negative, but you've kind of bought a car without first learning to drive or even getting a license. That (not being rectifiable now) means you probably won't be able to play all these models in one list (this isn't like 40k and even then there are limits on types and numbers). Are you sure they are King Tigers? 5 King Tigers is alot and I'm not sure there is a dedicated list, plus they have significant draw backs (like breaking down if you fail a skill check and stay there the whole battle). If you say they are proxy Tiger 1E's etc you could use the Michael WIttman TIgers Marcsh list which is actually really good for beginners. See our Dakka Article here. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Starting_a_Flames_of_War_Force Otherwise buy a Late War book as per above 1. Earth & Steel 2. Grey Wolf Or to save money look through the free lists of the BF Website here. http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=108&kb_cat_id=100 Most have been added into Earth & Steel or Grey Wolf, so I don't think there are any that suit your needs. Unless you pretend the King TIgers are Elephants ?? http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Briefings/653-Schwerepanzerjagerabt.pdf That would work as a Tiger P (King tiger) and BergePanther (panther) would be HQ. 2 Platoons of King Tigers proxying as Elephants? That would give near 1500 points, plus another 250 points to spend on Arty etc.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

Thanks for the information. I tried desperately to tell him he needed a book before dumping all that money into pieces. He told me yesterday though that he has "no intention of getting into a table top game." So I was heart broken.

He is as my family describes the three of us (he has a brother) they are the USSR that hide be hind their iron curtain and I'm the west. They sell nothing simply because they know you want it. Very strange and cruel people. It sucks he won't play. I might actually have others to play with though for FoW which is great since the only person I have lined up to play 40k with is playing SW and will probably lose heart soon. Time to get the gf an army!

I can't comment on getting a GF into the hobby (as I've never had one ) That said, my advice would be to keep being persistent about him getting into the game. Like I have friends who swore up and down they'd never play FoW, and after much persistence on my part they decided to start armies (Schwere on this very forum is an example of this)

Just my 2 cents
