First off let me introduce myself. My name is Ryan, I am married with 2 boys and I am a Marine stationed out in California.

Now,

I bought all these from a neighbor at a garage sale yesterday and I was told that they were all Warhammer figures. There are a lot that appear to be broken, but there are a lot of pieces and parts in the bag.

I didn't take a total count, but there are way more Orcs than human figures, and I am not quite sure if the human are part of the same universe seeing as they are sort of dressed in a colonial fashion, but then again I have no idea.

I basically bought these as a small project for myself, maybe set up a terrain model after I get them all painted up, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I paid a whole $30 for everything pictured so if I got screwed I don't feel too bad.

Those are Warhammer Fantasy Orcs and Humans indeed.

The minis look like they are from an older edition, unfortunately Im not really that familiar with fantasy, but Im sure someone else will be able to ID them and give you more direction.

Welcome to the forums!

Thank you for the info and the welcome.

The base plates have "GW 1991" "GW 1995" & "GW 1999" not sure if that helps out at all.

The humans are from The Empire, it seems to be an older starter set perhaps?

Nice find.

As others have mentioned, you have the core of two armies, Empire and orcs for the game "warhammer". You've also got what appears to be some parts to an airbrush system.

If you want to play the current edition of Warhammer, you will need the Warhammer rulebook. Look for the "small" rulebook that comes with the "Isle of Blood" starter set, it's available fairly cheaply second hand online. Also, you'll need the Army book for orcs and empire.

Also, depending on your boys' age, if they're too young for Warhammer, you could paint up a couple figs and introduce them to the joys of wargaming with a ruleset like "Song of Blades and Heroes" . It's a great easy-to-play gateway drug.

Thanks again for the information everyone. My boys are both still too young to grasp all this, but I hope to maybe get my wife into it.

Just curious, since I don't have access to the books just yet, what would I need to make a full fledged army out these little buggers?

Welcome to dakka, and thank you for serving.

I play 40k (sci-fi version of Warhammer) but I would think the first step would be to pick orcs or empire and get their codex/rule book. That will show you how to fill out a proper army list, and should include pics and details on the units available for that army.

Welcome to the forums & the hobby!

I'm not entirely sure as I've not played either 40k or fantasy for a long time, but I think you need 1 leadership choice and 2 troop choices for a core army.

You might find these links useful:

Getting started: Orcs and Goblins
Getting started: Empire

You also might find the below link interesting reading as it explains the setting of Warhammer Fantasy, and you can also find out about each faction by clicking the links under the geography sub-heading:

A little tip for you - Don't buy anything directly from Games workshop as it's quite pricey (as you've probably noticed) Try to get things off ebay if you can. You can save a lot that way.

Anyhoo, welcome again!

The only caveat to the above advice is if you are going to be playing in a local gaming store. ( Often referred to as FLGS or LGS. )

True, you can save about 10 to 25% on your models, but if your wife doesnt take up the hobby or you want to play on something other than a kitchen table you'll find that having a local store to play in with nice terrain and friendly fellows is well worth the extra money to support your store.

Those folks work long hours to keep everyone appeased on the weekends and most don't charge table fees. Keeping your custom in store helps make friends and keep a place to play.
