Hi folks, I've got a question for the Dakka community that came up in my game last night (IG vs. Chaos).

My IG list included a Basilisk (I had the model and wanted to be as close to WYSIWYG as I could be). I had placed the Basilisk in my deployment zone behind a low building, which completely blocked the hull of the tank from the other side of the table.

My question is, how do I draw line of sight from the Basilisk? What I was doing was measuring from the tip of the barrel (which meant I was in cover, but could still fire directly). My opponent didn't complain, but it seemed like cheating to me.

This is how we played last night, but I want to be sure I had understood the rules correctly. I've seen threads on the Forgeworld Hydras that come across the same issues, but never saw any resolution on the matter.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thre is no requirement in the rules for LOS to be reciprocal; you can certanly have I can see you but you can see me situations occur.

If all the opponent can see is the weapon barrel, then the opponent cannot see the vehicle (due to the exclusions on what can be targetted) howver you have to draw LOS *along* the barrel, with no deviation. If the building is tall enough that the gun is pointing up any significant degree, then you wont have LOS - youre pointing at the sky, when you look "along" the barrel.

If it were low enough the you can depress the barrel far enough to draw LOS along the barrel to a target, then you can indeed fire directly.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Just realised that rule nos, interesting. I always thought it was from the tip of the barrel, not a plane alone the entire thing. RAW, would this mean things like manticores and whirlwinds could never fire since they are pointing up? I'm assuming this is like laying a laser pointer along the weapon from mount to tip and if the target isn't illuminated by the laser the weapon is unable to shoot?

Reason I ask is because I had a guy argue at a local tourny saying that gun barrels could not be targeted to shoot at, so the barrel was pointed skyward and taken out of range. However the vehicles owner would not be able to shoot if left pointed in that direction? (also we read to the guy shooting what does and doesn't count as a viable target for vehicles)

Theyre unlikely to be able to fire directly if you havent modelled them able to turn and depress - if the model allows this, of course. As both can fire as barrage this is less of an issue...

Right, I was asking direct fire. My bad, should have been more elaborate.

Remember that for weapon fire arcs for a weapon which is glued in place, you play it as if it could swivel through the arc which it looks like it could traverse. IIRC you can get a basilisk to point straight ahead. If you've glued it up, you just need to pretend it's swiveling down.
