squats(AKA demiurg) are a race of space dwarves that were once an army. GW thought they were too humour based to be part of it's grimdark universe and removed them from play.

For those whovians out there, I something planned.

Something big.

Space dwarves.

Humans that got forgotten about way back when when humans were expanding everywhere but due to gravity and i think genetics too got stunted.

Really advanced human dwarves that were actually able to fend off the imperium when the imperium came a knockin to reunite humanity.

Timeline wise? From well before the great crusade untill tyranids showed up, and GW said that the tryanids ate them was the reason GW killed them.

Squats were around in 1st (1987) and 2nd edition (1993), but ceased to exist by 3rd edition (1998). But, they hadn't really been supported at all by GW dating back to 1993.

well they got rid of Squats to seperate fantasy from 40K... I just wish if they were going to get rid of the Dwarves out of 40k, why didn't they get ride of Elves, and Dark Elves... heck they added Undead to 40.....

That is quite a simplistic view "Elves" have a very fitting theme with them which I personally find very amusing, they do fit with 40k, they are quite grimdark

Mainly because the Eldar had an established background that made them far more than just "Elves in Space" whereas the Squats really didn't have anything separating them from other vehicle/tank-based armies... and were Biker Dwarves on Bikes with Guns.

They were dropped because GW felt they'd painted themselves in a corner with the Squats and, at the time, saw no way out of it, from a writing perspective. They also, at the time, were not that well-selling (compared to other lines of models), and so the decision was made to drop them.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

There was an interview I saw a while ago with someone important from GW (I forget who). He said that the models were selling okay (other armies sell worse), and the fluff wasn't that terrible (other armies have their roots in things much sillier than "biker dwarfs" like "elf samurai" or "fungus orks"), but the entire problem was that no one at GW was excited about Squats, so no one wanted to give them any updates.

So, they were going to be doomed to having old rules, old models, and no support forever (less than even SoB!). And, rather than drag along an extra army that no one wanted to support, they were dropped.

Sigh, not quite right-if you read the Tau rumor thread (now locked, I believe) which included discussion of Demiurg, the Squats and Demiurg are NOT the same thing. One is an alien race, the other is a race of humans with mutations. They are not the same thing. Both are "Dwarves in space," but in different ways. It's like comparing fantasy dwarves with real human beings who suffer from dwarfism.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
