Dear Dakkanites,
On a recent game, an opponent was playing with a Stormraven without a base.
I've tried to shoot at it when it was hidden behind a short slope (a couple of inches high) and I was told that the Stormraven could still get a cover save, as it would have landed - and so was in cover, behind the short hill.
For future reference, considering that if the model was based he would be completely out of any plausible cover - how does this work?
Are these landing shenanigans valid for the shooting phase cover?
At the time, not wanting to create a big fuss, I've just allowed the cover saves, but for future reference, can anyone validate/argue this?
Thanks!

No - it's not allowed. You're required to use the base supplied with the model.

as stated and to lend support, it's not allowed.
The Stormraven must be played on the base, this determines how to give cover saves as well as reach melee. If your opponent "lost" his flying base, they can surely muster the funds to get another one since they purchased a Stormraven.

Per the rulebook, models must be used with the base provided.
Further, per the skimmer rules, a skimmer must be used on its flying base.
He was cheating (though may not have been doing so intentionally).

As long as that is the base the model came with, then yes, it is allowed.

Yeah, you got cheated bud. The Core rulebook even specifically says that skimmers (of which the Stormraven is one) cannot land during the course of a game and thus must remind on their base.

Only if they have Landing Gear and that is a specific exception. In general, they cannot land.

Tau landing gear do not allow you to remove the base. It just allows you to treat the vehicle as if it were not a skimmer. (which would mean if I tank shock you you can't dodge).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies. |

It is still rumored, but 6th will introduce rules for fliers and GW produce an errata stating the models on the large flying/skimmer base will be considered fliers rather than a skimmer.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Which means it only gets hit with shooting on 6(unless its from an AA mount) and cannot be assaulted by anything except Jump Infantry.

Unless they change the rules for fliers as well.
Talking about potential changes in a theoretical publication is pretty pointless... they might change Flier rules to mirror current Skimmers-on-a-large-oval-base rules... which would mean no change overall.

Most of my Skimmers (Eldar) are no longer on flying bases. Years of improper storage, poor transportation, and battle damage during gaming has lead to almost all of them breaking off and me not bothering to repair them any more.
But, I still assume LOS based on where they should be. And, I always give benefit of the doubt to my opponent if there's some ambiguity in LOS.
Next time you play an opponent with skimmer not on a base, suggest this option first, don't just call their models illegal.

However, to counter that, Flyers must move their max allowed distance without doubling back.
They can leave the table(disengaging) and come back on the next turn to represent them strafing. When they do this they also can rearm any one shot weapons they had(although this will put them back into reserves)

Even with this counter, it still sounds like a sweet deal. re-arming blood strike missles....yes please! lol

Which is why I doubt the current rules for Flyers will be used. That, or expect the point cost of the units to double.
