What I've done so far. Have you guys got any tips for smoother blends, I'm struggling to get them any smoother than I currently have. Also your general thoughts on what I'm going for so far. The other hand will hold an axe but it is not currently attached

I agree, that's looking very nice! Might I inquire upon how you painted the skin?

Yeah, agreed. The skin looks amazing.
I really wouldn't stress about it not looking 'smooth', it looks fantastic.
Looking forward to seeing more

I hear the easiest and simplest way is to wash it in the same colour as the base coat (assuming there is a shade below and highlights above), but it'd have to be very thin (using something other than water).
It's at least going to be something to do with a wash seeing as you don't have an airbrush. Personally I find it very well blended already.
+1 to 'how in the HELL is the skin on the wings looking that good'.

Generally, I think you're in great shape, as it stands. If you want to smooth the transitions further, I'd suggest glazing. Painting a thin coat (so that it doesn't pool, otherwise you'll be messing with your shading) of a premixed wash or diluted ink will soften layer transitions and up the color saturation. It'll also darken things slightly, so think about whether you'd want to run your highlights a touch lighter, beforehand. I use this technique on ork skin every time I paint it (using a very thin coat of Thrakka Green) and have recently had success on red cloth (using Vallejo Game Color red ink thinned with water). Bear in mind, though, that the washes and inks usually have a different finish than the paints used elsewhere on the model, so you'll end up with funky mismatched glossiness if you don't varnish afterward, to tie the finishes together. [edit:] I should add that premixed washes and inks aren't the only way to glaze, but they're certainly the easiest. Regular paints with low opacity and those thinned with water and/or additional mediums (including dedicated glazing mediums) also work, but I don't believe them to be as well suited to your specific task.

It looks very good to me. Maybe some closer photos would help to see the blending problems that you perceive.
