Hardened Veteran Guardsman
|
Hi
I just had a thought about my guardsmen. I paid real attention to detail when assembling them, in that the guardsmen with bayonettes on their lasguns have empty bayonette holsters, and the guardsmen with no bayonettes on their lasguns have one in the holster.
Just in case nobody has noticed and would like to do it in the future with their guard
I think it's really cool.

Yeah, I just noticed that a few weeks ago, and I have been collecting for years! It makes you wonder how many other subtle modelling bits are included on minis that we never notice.

I think some of my guardsmen have two bayonettes and some have none. Sucks to be them.

None of mine have bayonets on their rifles (all were removed).
They do have sharpened entrenching tools, though.

On a tangent, I have kinda a hard time believing that in the far (grimdark) future, there will ever seriously be dudes stabbing each other in war. I mean, that virtually never happens now, in the present.
So, pics of these holders?

Center guy have a sheath but no bayonet. EDIT He has one, just not in the sheath, but on his rifle...
I dont feel it needs to be matched up, I feel like in battle, the possibility of a lost bayonet is very possible.

Gee, thanks, Ouze. Now my mob of slugga boys are having an existential crisis.

I'm suprised everyone didn't notice this, it seems like standard practice to me.

Actually it's your slugga boyz that allow it to make sense.
Remeber training and equipment are adjusted based on current needs. Using Guardsmen vs. Orks as a good example (being the near ubiqutous matchup that could appear on any planet in the imperium at any time). Orks have a high toughness (and a fluff backing to support it) and the lasgun (autogun, ect.) a low enough S and AP (and also enough fluff supporting that), that an Ork mob could survive (enough) to get into hand-to-hand with guardsmen. For that reason the guardsmen would need training and weapons for hand-to-hand to be able to have a chance against these tough, fearless, savages. Futhermore units like Assault Marines take this one step futher with the addition of powered armor and jump packs, specifically leveraging the fact that the armies of planets/races who were advanced enough for the imperium to take notice (and need to send space marines) would probably also be planets that saw ranged combat as the norm and hand to hand as the exception.
Remeber in the US Army hand-to-hand was only taught to Rangers and other specialized troops prior to the War on Terror, because during the Cold War it was assumed all fighting would be with guns (or bigger). After the War on Terror when US troops found themselves mixing it up with angry locals (but not always actual bad guys) hand-to-hand (with a focus on techniques for subduing an opponent without killing them) became standard training practice.
While I agree that fixed bayonets might be a bit of a stretch, the the 40k universe training and equipping your force for at least some hand-to-hand fighting would make perfect sense.

Excellent rationale. I stand corrected, and surely this has boosted Oadie's Ork's morale.
