So I've been browsing a site with some pretty awesomely painted miniatures and the ones that stood out the most to me seem to have this smooth gradient shading thing in common.

so any suggestions on how I can achieve this? use more layers?get a paintgun/airbrush?
are there any good tutorials out there?

thanks for the advice everyone!
It's good to know that it's possible to get this effect without getting an airbrush (might be easier with one but oh well), damn things are too pricey.
