Hey guys!

This year i finally put actions behind my words and got seriously into wargaming.

Right now i am in the stage of finding out what army i should choose as my main.
The Black Templars seems like a real nice one.
But if i buy a whole army now, or at least starts building one up, how can i be sure that when there comes out a new Black Templars codex that it won't be money wasted?
Like with the Daemonhunters and the Grey Knights?

I really hope somebody can help me

Well thank you very much for your kind hospitality, but could one of you maybe answer my question? I am truly lost.

Very hard question to answer mate, as no-one really knows what will happen or when... Sorry for a truly crap answer.lol.

Templars are a great army but hard to play with the current codex being a little “old” You could always paint the army like Black Templar and invest in the Space Marine codex for now, play the army as Vanilla Marines… and “if” the rumored codex does actually come out then field them as Black Templar.
As a Templar player myself I’m a little hesitant to build more troops until something happens only because I’ve heard of new sculpts possibly in the works….
Also look into:
Death Eagles, Relictors Angels of Vengeance, Death Specters all of which have a very similar color scheme and cane be fielded as regular marines until GW makes up it’s mind….

Welcome to DakkaDakka. I'd have to agree with whats been said above. The kits and wargear between the different SM codices, with the exception of GK, are similar enough. And if you make a regular codex army for now, BT still use bolter marines.

Welcome to Dakka, and nice choice in an Army. I play IG and Ultramarines (Codex Marines) and it is nice to see someone showing interested in something other than SW, BA, or Grey Knights. That being said, play what you think you'd enjoy. The best perk of playing a marine based army is the fact the models are the same, that is, if you find BT are not for you, you can always repurpose the current models into any Codex Marine chapter, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, or even Grey Knights (depending on the models).

The other benefit is that Black Templars' color scheme is black and white, so repurposing them wont be too bad either as most base coats are black or white, so repainting, not a problem.

As for a new codex, don't get your hopes up on that one. Everyone wants to have their respective codex new and improved but the fact remains GW is slow to get stuff done and at the rate they are going Tau, BT, Chaos, Dark Angels, and Eldar wont get any updates until 6th ed, unfortunately.

So, as stated before, welcome to Dakka, and bottom line, play what you 'want' to play and what you 'think you will enjoy' because at the end of the day, you need to enjoy/have fun with what you are playing.

Thanks for all the great answers! This has been a great guide so right now the battle is between The Black Templars and the Necrons. Space Marines, Orks and Tyranids are cool and everything, but its just a little boring playing the same as everyone else. No hating! They are very cool armies.

Although you will mostly hear about how old or underpower the codex is due to age, it gives them unique things they can take. Orbs? Tank-Hunter ven dreds?
Last I checked people are running Black Templars and winning 100 people competitions.

It's probably not a great time to buy codex's etc because everything is due to change in the next 8 months with the advent of 6th edition.

I would try and pick up a cheap old codex off someone, most gaming groups have lots of members looking to get rid of bits to buy newer pieces etc.

You've been unlucky with timing, but you could still start your army and paint it and wait for rules to come out. It will take a few months to paint a decent force (1500points) or even to afford it.

Necrons are a good bet now because they are unlikely to change for a longtime (due to their recent update) so you are future proofing your army.

But why update the rulebook to 6th edition before all the armies have been updated to 5th? And are there any examples of armies where they haven't done a kind of Daemonhunters => Grey Knights transformation, but simply stopped updating the codex at all?
