I'm sorry if this already has been answered.
Would both units here get cover?
Would all units here get cover? (gunfire from same direction as last image)
Seems like you just can get infinite cover for your army.
Again, sorry if this has been answered before.

Regarding the first one:
BRB FAQ wrote:Q: Who gets the 4+ cover save for intervening models
when two units are intermingled? (p21)
A: The unit with the model closest to the enemy that is
firing does not have a cover save.
In the second situation, however they would all receive a 4+ cover save except the blue group. That would be dependent on what the cover actually is.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Thanks!
But for the second image that would mean you could get cover for your entire army using just 1 piece of "landscape cover"?
Of course the cover of front unit, the one actually in cover by the landscape, would be affected by the nature of the landscape cover. But say that landscape cover gives 4+.
Then your entire army has 4+ cover using just 1 piece of "landscape 4+ cover"...
edit: What my problem with this is I guess is that if say there was only one little piece of cover on the entire board, a small bunker or so... i could use that to give cover to an infinite number of troops...
Seems soooo counterintuitive. If i had a heavy bolter and was shooting at the units in the second image "for real", then the fact that they were packed together like that would mean i killed MORE units, not less

No, in the second example it is the unit in front of the unit behind that grants cover to the unit behind, assuming the unit is shooting through the unit in front.

But (except in some rare circumstances) you would also be giving cover saves to the entire enemy army with all but one of your units. All except the front unit would be firing through other units and so would give the target a cover save. So there is a built in balance.
And while your example is a little extreme, variants of this "units giving other units cover" are an important and useful strategy for many armies.

OK, thanks guys. I guess that's how the rules are.
The units giving other units cover is insane IMO.
I thought the "experiments" in WW1 where they mass charged against german machine guns showed that bunching up a mass of units against modern weapons doesn't really yield a higher survival rate
Well well, tha game be tha game... I'll accept it!

This is not a WW1 game, and WW1 soldiers did not have armor like the 40K guys do.
But on topic: Nos and Happy are correct.

Still, I'm guessing the laws of physics haven't changed in 39k years.
Btw, WW1 soldiers didn't have to take shots from things like this either

It's a game, and there are abstractions all over it. Tactically it usually doesn't work out to layer your units too much.

Yeah, it's a game. I'll give it a rest. I was just curious because it seemed such a strange rule.
But if i don't agree I should go make my own game, right?

Or you can always house rule it in your home games. You can do whatever you like; one of the advantages to this game over computer games.
