Subject: Using SM units in an IG army legally?
|
 |
Storm Trooper with Maglight

I've just started out with an IG army, the models I'm using are all second hand that I've swapped/bartered for with friends that used to play, I have 2 bread and butter SM tactical squads and I was wondering if there is any way I can legally use them alongside my IG army?
I know IG can use SOB and that under daemon hunters I can use IG alongside grey knights but that defeats the object of having an IG army as far as I'm concerned, and my army will not be larger that 1000 pts so I wouldnt be playing apoc.
Any input/ suggestions?
Advice on how to fit in the current stuff I own into an existing force/codex/whatever (whether its demon hunters with minimal inquisitorial influence and mostly IG and using IG rules, keeping my CCS but having to add an inquisitor or something?) would be appreciated too, I'm just looking to be able to fit what I've got together and stay along the lines of a typical IG force but with SM units?

Outside of an Apocalypse game or house rules, it is not generally 'legal' to mix codices.

I heard you can use them as "allies" and stay in keeping with regular rules? :S
If not then how would the demon hunters rules affect my guard army? Would I still have the same units and wargear available/ rules apply? (e.g orders)

Nope, "allies" are only relevant in Apoc.
Only units present in your codex can be used unless specific exceptions are given.
Stop worrying about Demon Hunter rules....just think of them as having been replaced by the Grey Knights codex.
They do not have the same name, but nobody in their right mind says; "Codex Daemon Hunters is still relevant and "official" because Codex Grey Knights doesn't have the same name!".

Daemon Hunters and Witch Hunters are no longer valid codicies, they've been replaced.

Ah thats lame, so theres no existing loophole that I can use to stick 2 tactical squads in at all?
Can Grey Knights or whatever else can field SMs also use IG units? If theres no loophole for having SMs in an IG army then what about anything else that can use units from both? D:

Are you listening? Grey Knights can not field SM units.
GW has removed all that jazz, and only made it relevant in Apoc.

You can no longer mix codices. At all. No SM in IG armies and vice versa, no SM in GK armies and vice versa...you get the point.
The ONLY exception to this is apoc, and even then you need a very good reason.

The only way to use the IG and SM models (Not units, just the models) in a GK army is to use henchmen. But they would not have any of the IG or SM stats, you would have to use the henchmen stats from the GK codex.

Just because its a "friendly" game doesn't mean anything goes. Don't be surprised if your opponents want you to field a "legal" army.

I said it could work..... anyway, its propably a matter of definition; my definition of a friendly game is a game where the fun is way more important than the rules, so you can make a lot of changes. (That doesnt say you dont have fun in a rule-obeying game )

*MASSIVE facepalm*
See what you did, Mr. Merlin??
I'm sorry, but no, Trephines.
You cannot go ahead and say; "I'll just use it in friendly games".
Since you are going beyond the scope of the rules, ie you are making stuff up, you need to ask your opponent each and every time if he is OK with it.
And keep in mind, he is not being a killjoy or a TFG or a rules lawyer if he says; "No, thank you.I prefer a standard game".

Sorry for not being more specific..... of course that only works in games against your buddies, and you have to agree on it before. Dont do it in any kind of serious game!

Yeah, I already understood that I'd need consent, pretty sure its self explanatory.
I just have a couple of squads gathering dust and fancy using them somehow O.O

That really depends on who he is playing against. If he is playing against regular opponents, there is every likelihood that they can just come to some sort of agreement on cross-codexization as a house rule for normal play.

I recall a time where this came up, something like 8-10 years ago. Now I am not a hunderd percenet on exactly where this came from, perhaps White Dwarf,or perhaps a dream, however, as I recall it: A player MAY field two allied armies (IE SM and IG), as long as :
1) The opposing player is aware of it and agrees
2) One army is dominant in points( IE IG has 1400pts, SM 600Pts).
3) The secondary army adheres to the basic Force organization rules of 1 HQ , 2 Troops base.
4) The Force org is not exceeded by the combined army, (IE 3 HQ, 2 IG 1 Marine, 7 Troops, 4 Elite, etc...)
Again, it was a long time ago, From a source I no longer recall, but it is perfectly sensable and I rememeber a couple of us playing this way for larger games. Either way, it all hinges on who and where you are playing. Personally, I see no issue with it, so long a things don't get out of hand.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
