Hi Dakka!

First post, and I have some noob questions

I've recently started to paint faces, but it still does not feel right - I'm probably putting highlights on wrong places or doing some other "trivial" mistakes.
Here are some examples of what I've done so far, so if you have any constructive criticism, I'll be glad to hear it.

Some more are here: https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/33262794/4/Figurky/Warhammer/Space%20Wolf/Faces?h=b72106

BTW: I know, black Space Wolves are totally anti-fluff, but I take it as a painting opportunity (and I'm not really a fluff-adict )

I say it's the eyes. IMO eyes make the model look awkward. The shading is more dramatic and realistic when you dont paint the eyes.

Eyelids need to go on. Use your mid-shade fleshtone, and highlight the eyelids slightly.

It's just that the eyes are too bright in contrast to the skin. Use bleached bone for the whites, and maybe a very watery sepia wash, then use a light brown for the pupils. What you have done is add caucasian eyes to african skin tone

The eyes do seem off, Personally the skin tone seems really dark and redish. I don't know if its the picture or the look you are going for. But it seems off to me.

A quick tip. If your going to do the iris color in the eyes, paint a black dot for the pupil afterwards or just paint the whole iris black. The blue iris without ablack pupil is much to bright. Also if you can, shade more between the eye-white and the skin around it. There should not be a white line between the pupil and skin at the top and bottom of the eye, only on the sides of the eye.

As for the skin, highlight more. Brighter tones. But that depends offcource if you want him in a darker skintone or not. but for spacewolves... living on Fenris, I'd go with a brighter skintone

What seems off to me is that the really dark parts of the skin, the recesses, are black rather than dark brown. It makes them look a bit like they have soot on their faces.

Replace the black with dark brown and I think they'd look great.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.
