Hey dakka,

My brother is running necrons nowadays (in addition to wolves and blood angels), and he often runs a unit of 6 or 7 immortals with a Lord, a cryptek, and some other odds and ends (often an Overlord too at 1500). Now my question is, what is the best way to deal with them? I usually have to deal with scarabs and wraiths as they move swiftly towards me, and he then just moves and runs and what not forwards hugging terrain and by the time I've dealt with the wraiths/scarabs, he's there with his hard unit waiting to beat me round the head with it. I've only played against him with my Grey Knights so far (and they aren't exactly an optimized list, about 50/50, its got the beginnings of a crowe list then I go all funny with choices), and next time it'll be with my guard.

I normally run a CCS with 4 meltas and an astropath in a vendetta, 2 units of vets with demolitions (3xplas in one, 3xmelta in the other), harker's squad with demolitions and 3xmelta, 2 vanilla LRs with lascannons and the man himself, marbo. or an ever so slight variation on that list.

What will be my best bet? I was going to use the LRs to deal with scarabs at range, and the Vendettas to neutralize the wraiths, suicide marbo beside his unit and then just hope I kill the wraiths and scarabs in time to re-task my vendettas/russes?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

He shouldn't be able to have a lord and tek in a group of immortals w/o two overlords. You can put one member from each royal court into another group, no more.

Sorry, overlord in a CCB as well. Forgot to mention that. It is a legal list he runs.

Just to clarify, you mean 6 or 7 Lychguard right? (the topic and context make it pretty clear, just making sure).

As far as tactics go, I would see if I could swamp them with something early while they are still in their deployment zone to seperate them from the fast threats and allow you to deal with each unit separately. They're one of those units the Ogryns match up with quite well, although I realise its apocrypha to even mention such a unit to some Guarders.

Dude I play (I play orks) runs that lych guard unit with the power weapons etc. its pretty choppy. He does the same thing w the wraiths and scarabs, then throws some of those MC dung beetles plus the arc cannon thing on each flank to hit my mek and buggies. It a tough list. The wraiths are just tough enough to tarpit until the lych guard gets there. My lootas dont do me a heck of alot good for that jump move because of night fighting, tbh its a pita list.

I havent played him about a month but if he runs that list again I am going to deploy furth back and try to spread him out. make him run to one side of the board so that his wraiths are not optimized to tarpit while his lych guard basically just run up behind. I would suggest going second and then deploying far left or right and try to not let him "just run right into you" which if I am guessing correctly is exactly what he is doing to you. Make him stretch out and try to run up his flank.
