Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows the correct ratio of GW paints to Water to make a successful wash? or would watering them down that much affect the pigment content too much?

eg - 3:1 water/ultramarine blue

would be great if i was able to make my own washes as £2.30 for a pot of water seems extortionate to me.

In my experience trying water/paint mixes leave "coffee" stains on the mini, so as to speak. The homemade wash doesn't flow like the real ones and won't make nice soft edges.

However, if you do want to make your own, adding a small amount (don't take that too literally ) of PVA glue will make it run better, but it still won't compare to the GW washes.

Your not really just paying for water, your mostly getting pigments, additives and binders.

In order to make a succesful paint wash you need to add in something in addition to water to make the mix flow or else it will just pool on the minature. Generally I use Flo-Aid to do this at roughly 10 parts water to 1 part Flo-Aid. Just bear in mind that if you use to much Flo-Aid your paint will never set right.

A better alternative to making a paint was is to use and Ink and make a glaze.

You need matte medium in there as well.
Modhe podge works. Basically a thick glue.

Try painting a 2 inch by 2 inch square on a plastic surface with water. It will be impossible unless you thicken it up with something. You could use white glue in a pinch, 2:1:1 with water:paint:glue

PVA does the opposite, it increases surface tension making it less useful as a traditional wash. A tiny spot of washing up liquid decreases the surface tension and lets it flow into the cracks better. As you say tho, water and paint doesn't make a wash, even with soap added. You need other mediums, flow enhancers etc added.

If you do want to make your own washes, this is what you need to follow. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page

With paint I would recommend against the Matte Medium as its going to lighten your paints. Paint, Water and Flo-Aid works just fine but generally gives you a much less noticable effect then going with a pre mixed wash or with Les's recipe.
