In an effort to not devolve into a flame against chaos grey knights, and to try and convey my question in as unirritating manner as possible I avoided putting the word chaos in the thread title, be warned it appears in this post .

Anyway to the topic at hand, I have been working on converting beastmen into what I intended to form a renegade guard listing, however I now find myself craving converting more chaos inspired units from either corrupted aliens, humans etc.

Having read through various armies codex's in the past and failing to settle on one that I feel can cover what I am after I have looked at all of the discussion surrounding henchmen lists for Grey Knights. Would it be too far to use the Grey Knight codex, and Coteaz (but no actual grey knights) to represent a Rogue elite Chaos renegade list with a particularly potent warmaster leading the charge and holding the rabble together. This would give me the opportunity to convert up various themes for henchmen squads from different gods, cultures and races whilst still having a viable codex to use.

Quick Summary of the Concept:

Renegade Warband using Grey Knight Codex
Counts as Coteaz as Warmaster
No Grey Knights
Henchmen units as troops (Beastmen Legionnaires, Corrupt Guard, Cultists, mutants, mindwiped etc)
Potential daemon engine as Dread Knight.

Thoughts and critisisms? Be gentle.

It might rub some people the wrong way, but I think it's a great idea. Doesn't offend my sensibilities anymore than a Genestealer Cult using the IG or Ork codex would. If you do well modeling/painting everything, people should have no reason to complain...I would personally be a lot happier facing an army like the one you've proposed than another generic Grey Knights army.

Go for it and ignore what any snot-nosed, arrogent little fether might say against the idea!

I think it would be an awsome looking army if you can pull of your concept. Beastmen rabble/traitor guardsmen are easily worked into Warrior henchmen imho. Plus, you wouldn't want to convert up some excruciation servitors/crono gladiators to use as arcos?!
There's the Darkwatchers who would be perfect as crusaders since the 3++ from the storm shield perfectly represents how they can flit in and out of reality almost like ghosts.

Besides, lots of chaos players have already used the GK codex for things like Heresy-era Thousand Sons! (and who can really blame them?!)

In the end, it's YOUR army and you can use whatever legal rules set you want to represent it.

It's definitely cool and doable. Daemonettes or Bloodletters for DCA's, Warriors of Chaos for Crusaders, traitor guard/cultists for regular henchmen, it practically writes itself.

Cool, from the responses thus far my faith in converting (and humanity) remains intact, I find myself loving the GK codex even if I'm less fond of the silver marines, just for the sheer number of possibilities it represents from a modelling point of view. Currently I'm finishing off 10 beastmen legionairres to be fielded as a henchmen squad before looking into the themes for my other henchmen groups.

Been throwing some ideas around thus far and here's where I'm at:

Scions of the Warrior God: 4 Armed Axe Wielding Gladiators as DCA, marked up as khornate with lots of brass but with an elegant vibe to it too. Likely based initially off of wyches with alot of GS. Considering using parts from daemonettes to mix in.

Cultists of the One: Robed Humanoids with a "third eye" on their heads to show path to enlightenment, likely run as normal henchmen.

Other than that I'm also looking at mixing in warriors of chaos with some beaten up power armour to make the crusaders, not marines but scavenged armour and stuff

It's not really a new idea using one of the newer dexes for an army to suit the player.

World Eaters use BA.
Some World Eaters use the sw book with mounted "crusher lords."
TS using gk book.
Traitor guard using IG book.
The list goes on.

I would make sure to explain to your opponent what everything is since Gors aren't something everyone has seen before. lol

The enemy of my enemy is a bastard so lets kill him too.

As long as they are not "chaos grey knights" go ahead and add marines in too, maybe representing Thousand Sons. Whatever you do, its your army, I'd still play against it as long as wysiwys is easy to understand.

I think it's a clever and interesting idea. Of course, by posting here you naturally agreed to show us what it'll look like once finished !

Strangely, saying that kind of things ("those who disagree are arrogant and wrong !") has a tendency to backfire. Just so you know

I think that's an awesome idea! Just as long as all the count as troops looks the same (Crusaders all look the same, Daemonhosts all look the same etc).

Related to what started as my WIP renegade guardsmen army and as an idea to what my generic henchmen are looking like I finished off the first 10 this evening (1 painted, 9 converted but still need cleanup and paintup), these will be fielded alongside powerfisting henchmen as 6 bolter henchmen, 2 melta henchmen and 1 flamer henchmen. This will be one of the more uniform squads in the army and likely one of the larger henchmen clusters but makes a good concept squad to keep me focused.

WIth the different types of units I will be constructing any idea on how to keep a uniform theme in the army (it will be a ragtag army, but I dont want people thinking I just grabbed random minis)

Edit: Helps if I post a pic when I say I have

My current conundrum is how to source the appropriate GW models to use as daemon hosts in one of my units, these will be representing lesser daemons forced into servitude by the warband (so pretty standard) but I am loathed to pay for the actual daemon host model since it makes running 5 incredibly expensive and somewhat unattractive to look at.

Does anyone have any experience converting such a unit or ideas as to how I can better represent it in a renegade force, I'm fond of their rules and eager to sue them but I've hit an imaginary road block on converting them

Going purely off of Cherubel's design in Inquisitor, I'd say basing Daemonhost off of a Zombie or Ghoul with copious green stuff, possibly jewellry chain, and a slightly more healthy pallour could work.

Also, I love this idea and look forward to seeing it progress.

I'd probably use Bloodletters for bound daemonhost types. Or you could use Empire Flagellants with some mutations.

Hrmm, the zombies from WFB just look too comical for me, not sure why it is and its certainly not rolling arund laughter but they come across as goofy to me. Would the concept of imperial guards men in the midsts of mutation and decay (probably a cross of catchans with the zombie kit), likely manifesting extra limbs etc would well enough to represent warp tainted (and in this case daemon possessed) troopers. With the lack of any physical chains remedied by carving runes into their skin to hold the daemon bound. This would give me alot more multipose miniatures while letting me use the wfb zombie bitz for rot.

I've also been looking at using the spares from this kitbash (and gs) along with a heavily modified plague bearer skaven main body to form my psykers (keep the robes, cut, file and GS away the rat elements and headswap)

Which means hopefully come pay day (one week) I could order:

Catachan (maybe cadian) guard squad
Zombie regiment
Plague monk regiment

to form up my psykers and daemon hosts

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Or after having looked through the GW site for the umpteenth time the flamers of tzzentch models may work well as chaos psykers in the throes of warp mutation. They look sufficiently potent whilst remaining cool, but have little opportunity for conversion in that they will always look like flamers just with a different paint job (more fleshy, bloody and visceral to represent warping flesh rather than warp spawned daemon.
