I Know alot of people use Death company as assault marines but I was wondering if I could keep them black?
say like



assault marine = the X;s and such are Yellow?
Honour Guard = X;s n helm n such are Gold?

or do I have to actually paint them Red?

I mean you could have a BA Successor chapter that has Black Armor normally

It is your army, you can do with it what you like. If they are assault marines it would be good to cover up the Xs, however.

for my i guess "chapter" they can be squad/unit type identifiers

People will generally think they're Death Company, so if you actually field DC you might want to figure that out before the game.

I Wont have any actual DC units, still trying to think of how im gonna paint them up

There is a successor chapter that the Dc is done in white armour. You could still always do red assault marines with black X's and do Gold X's on the HG. A few black X's in a unit of assault marines wouldn't look out of place. You could even do white X's, White on red stands out and it goes with any white wings you might decide to paint.

I think I mentioned to you before that I used the DC bits with regular assault marines. Buy an assault marine box or 2 and distribute the DC part through out the units. That way there isn't too many X's on any one model and they all have a little uniqueness to them.

You could still also do the traditional DC in red on black that way too
