I'm thinking that I don't really like the traditional yellow helmets on BA assault marines, so I was thinking of going with a gold helmet and gold trim on the shoulder pads. I know the usual response of "their your models, paint em how you want", but I was wondering if this color scheme would be too "non-fluff" or even somewhat confusing to my opponent. Thoughts?

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

I just took a look, and I think gold would be fine.

You don't think they would get mistaken for honor guard? BTW, what is the "standard" colors of BA honor guard?

They would probably not be mistaken with honor guard unless they had like over the top blood angel stuff, infernus pistols, etc.
I think of honor guard looking like sternguard with golden armor and red accents.

Yeah, the problem is that the "standard" colors for BA honor guard are literally exactly that. Assault squad marines with gold helmets.

It would be fairly "non-fluff" and slightly confusing as Honor Guard do in fact have rules.... but I mean, there are worse things you could do when painting your models.

Blood Angels denote troop types with helmet colors. Yellow is assault and gold is veteran. So gold helmets are correct for Vanguards and Honor Guards. No reason you couldn't tweak things around for your army though if you don't like the yellow look. BA don't use white helmets for example so you could use that or another color for one of your troop types.
Other colors used are the regular red for tacticals and blue for devestators.
You can also use some of the old rogue trader stuff for guides, a lot of marines were designated not just by helmet color but by a vertical stripe on the helmet so.. assault marines in your army could use gold helmets but the general designation for veterans could be some sort of stripe

Or you could drop the designation from the full helmet to just a stripe. That looks pretty good too.

Thanks for the responces guys! I'm still torn as to which color to paint them, but I'm leaning towards the gold helmets, they just look sooo good that way.

there is nothing stopping you from doing it. however i personally wouldn't, i don't think that gold looks very nice over large areas with a lot of complex lines like a helmet. the light reflects a little too much for my tastes. but that's just me, so go for it if it's what you want to do

Ok, When I got home I took a look at the helmets for my ass squads. What I've decided to do is paint the helmet blood red (same as the armor) but, paint the raised area on top of the helmet and the raised area that it connects to around the back, the gold color. More of a 2 toned look, should turn out nice.
