Stalwart Veteran Guard Sergeant

Ryza

Yesterday I tried SAGA with my new Viking warband. The band is made up of 3 units of hearthguard and one unit of berserkers.

First game against Welsh, I had left all my hearthguard as 4-man units. After 2 turns they had been picked off one by one until the only unit left was the warlord.

Second game against Vikings, I combined all my hearthguard into a single 12-man unit. Figured that if being split didn't work, I would go the opposite extreme. His units one by one threw themselves against my block and were wiped out.

I was suspicious of the special dice before I saw the game actually played, mainly due to a suspicion they were a gimmick. I had heard of all the attention the game had gotten, but all of the info made it seem like a oversimplified game (all weapons are the same) that is overly chance driven. It would be an understatement to say I was wrong, the game has much more depth than it would appear, yet is still easy to learn. The battleboards are far more clever than they appear, and do far much to differentiate the sides. I rate the game 4.5 out of 5 stars. The expansion looks interesting, here's to hoping they add skraelings next. (I'm already working on that warband)

Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”
