West Virginia

So, this is my current lineup of Space Marines. I'm looking for advice on how to flesh this force out and improve on their effectiveness. Basically at the moment I have everything that came in the giant army starter back at Christmas and another squad of Tactical Marines.

The Command Squad and Captain are riding around in the Land Raider. I only listed the items for the vehicles that are in addition to their standard loadouts.

I know this is a very basic list but it's all I really have to go with at the moment and keep below 1500 pts. In addition I have a five man squad of Scouts and a Land Speeder Storm but I'm not a big fan of them. So, at the moment I'm thinking of adding some Assault Marines for some close combat action and maybe some Devastators. Also trying to get ahold of some Combat Squads so I can give guys the extra Melta and Plasma Guns I didn't use.

Close to Maddness, Far from Safe

I would always run two dreads, when you have only one it is to easy for the enemy to take him out, having another gives your enemy another headache to deal with.

Also I'm not a fan command squads really, a squad of termies would be be cheaper and more deadly, however apothecary is a good thing to stick with your captain so maybe take a few upgrades away from the command squad, the plasma pistol and gun and maybe the melta bombs (you got a melta gun so you should be good on anti-tank)

other then that I think your army is pretty a pretty good starter army, add more as you see fit.

Another Dreadnought couldn't hurt. I mostly slapped the melta bombs on everybody because I had some points left over and I figured why not. I fully intend to get a squad of close combat terminators in the near future and stick them in the Crusader. Will make up for the rest of my troops being decidedly shooty in orientation.

I would recommend specializing the Captain + Command Squad + Transport to either melee or ranged. The current setup does both things but ineffective.

I can see a point in using a Captain + Command squad in a LR, but I would run that squad more melee in that case.
Add Lightning Claws and Storm Shiels instead of the Plasma. If you want to add special weapons to that, give them melta's, as they'll most likely be dropped close to enemy lines.
You can drop the plasma and dozer blades on the tact squads to free up points.

If you want the Plasma Spam CC, I would advise dropping the LR and most of the upgrades on the Captain + Command Squad.
Take 4 Plasma Guns to work with the Apo's FnP, give the Captain a simple Power Sword and maybe a Plasma Pistol, and give them a Las/Plas Razorback for more plasma goodness.

That saves you a lot of points since you don't need the LR anymore. If you still want to use a LR anyway, consider the standard variant instead of Crusader, since it doesn't transport anymore. Keep it at max range and let the LC's do their work. Alternatives could be adding Fists to the Tac squads and adding another Dreadnought.

Also, instead of dozer blades and plasma guns, you could consider combat squadding the Marines and using Razorbacks.

Finally, I would consider dropping the Dread in a drop pod to make good use of the 5 BS/WS instead.
