Subject: Drop Pod Question - Inertial Guidance System

Hey,
In the rules for deep striking, it says to place the model "anywhere on the table" - which, I assume, includes on top of friendly/enemy models or impassable terrain, since they're somewhere on the table.
Then in the drop pod rules, under Inertial Guidance System, it says "Should a Drop Pod scatter on top of impassable terrain or another model (friend or foe!) then reduce the scatter distance by the minimum required in order to avoid the obstacle." (emphasis mine)
So if I were to place a drop pod directly on top of impassable terrain and roll a direct hit, does that destroy the pod and contents, or do I scatter the pod to where it lands 1" away from the terrain/models that it was initially targeted on?
I did use the search function, but I couldn't find anything that answered this question. Probably just a search-fu fail; I searched for "inertial guidance system" and it brought up a lot of results for 'nids and a flamewar or three.

It reduces scatter - if you don't scatter, you mishap into impassable terrain.

So it mishaps. Thanks, couldn't find that anywhere in the book - figured it was a RAW vs RAI thing.

Its RAW - if you don't scatter, there's no scatter to reduce.

Yeah, I was assuming that RAI would adjust it to where it doesn't mishap on terrain/units, even if the scatter dice was a dead hit.
Thanks for the prompt answer, got a game coming up in a bit and I've got a drop pod list I'd like to test out.

Nah, if you're silly enough to target impassable terrain, you deserve the mishap

I still say drop pods (and things like land raiders or any other deep striking vehicle with the "tank" rule) should squish the ever-living hell out of whatever it drops on, barring impassable terrain.
Either that or perform an automatic tank shock on the models it drops on (friend OR foe!)

Yeah, that wouldn't be a huge balancing issue.

Spending 200+ points for a land raider that's basically a one-shot orbital bombardment, or cheap drop pods that give up free kill points?
Seems pretty balanced to me.

Until you drop your 35pt empty drop pod on top of a 500pt Draigo rock and squish it.
Does not sound balanced to me at all.
Edit: But would be hilarious. To me. Not to the GK player obviously.

GAH! Now I have an image of a Powerfist Sergeant knocking a deep striking pod as in Super Smash Bros, where you (or your opponent) goes flying into the background.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

LOL. Maybe they'd have to bring a Power Bat to the field?
Power Bat: s10 against incoming drop pods. Any hits automatically cause the pod to scatter 3d6.

Tau Sentry turrets can already do this (unless they changed IA3 rules, ive not checked....) sort of - if they end up landing on a vehicle they both get a glancing hit. Took out a LR in 4th by doing that....
