Re-visiting the Templars

Templars were my first 40k army and back then I really didn't put forth much effort in painting... I basically just primed the models and then slopped white on the shoulder pads haha.

So this time around I really want to achieve the proper black highlighting.

A friend of mine got me the finecast Emperors Champion for Christmas and so here is my first attempt at painting black with highlights. For the most part I'm happy with it but not so much with the robes.

Let me know what you think and if you have any tips for painting robes I'd appreciate it.

He looks great but the reaf looks dim compaired to him. Perhaps brighten it more?

I have to agree, the reaf kind of does look dim. But besides that, ohmygoshsir, this is amazing!

To highlight the robe, take Bleached bone, or the new equvilant there of and do a light coat. leave it out of the deepest recesses and this will give it a shadowed look. then take Bleached bone and mix it with skull white. then highlight again but keep it away from the recesses even further leaving the last layer showing. the folow up with straight skull white on the extream edges. :-) otherwise, I'd have sex with him. ;-)

for the loincloth glazing will give you the best result,
but it's also a technique that requires some practice. Try glazing bleached bone. With each layer closer to the edge avoiding the recesses


other then that it looks really good! How did you highlight the black? And can we get a pic how you painted the sword?

What is a reaf?

In my opinion, the armor is very nice and understated. The tabards could be a little lighter, as would be the laurels. Maybe a bit more highlighting?

reaf is the little laurel (band of leaves) on the helmet

Ah, a wreath…..

A few updates on this guy, still not sure about the robes. I added some silver highlights to the wreath and took some pictures showing the sword. Also toned down the highlights on the armor I felt it was a little too bright. Still need to apply the decal and finish the base.

@ DijnsK: The highlights on the black armor was achieved by priming him black and then airbrushing from the top down a dark grey and then a lighter grey mixed with blue.
