Has anyone found this tyranid trick effective?

If you have first turn, move your zoan brood up, cast onslaught using a tervigon, run the zoey, fire your 18inch warp lance for some first turn tank hunting

6 inch move 18 inch shot, 1 to 6 inch run,
25 to 32 range on first turn. Maybe take out a tank on turn 1. Sounds like you can surprise a lot of
Opponents with this

Sure it could work but you are spending 15 pts for onslaught when you could just give them a spore for 40 pts and ensure you land pretty close to where you want to be. Plus you run the risk of running only 1inch and potentially being out of range. I think it is a cool technique but podding them in is just more reliable.

Then again in a KP game you give up a point for the pod so your idea isn't all that bad. Saves 25 pts and doesn't give up a KP.

The only downside I see here is your not casting Catalyst on a unit when you are using onslaught.

It depends on how much high strength armor denying shooting your opponent has to tell whether its with it. If your opponent is sending a bunch of lascannons your way on his vehicles, then why not go for the surprise shot. If he isn't then that FNP may be a better investment.

Onslaught has its uses but there's drawbacks and quirks, some mentioned some not.

--Gotta cast either catalyst or onslaught per turn.
--Taking both powers is quite expensive, may need to decide either or and its hard to ditch catalyst.
--Using onslaught takes away the tervigons ability to run, shoot or assault that turn (since it is a shooting power that targets a friendly unit).

I like onslaught more in combination with a nidzilla build, where t-fexes, hive guard, tyrants or carnifexes are benefiting. Especially the MCs, where they are getting closer not only to shoot but to eventually assault and/or control midfield.

I use this any time someone deploys a LR, Pred, Vindicator or Hammerhead on the deployment line if the deployment type makes it possible. Additionally I'll only do it with 1 zoey squad unless it's a LR with something very dangerous in it, then I'll use as many squads of zoeys as I can get into range. If it's only done with 1 squad there's still tervigons leftover to catalyst things.

"I drive a big car, cuz I'm a big star. I'll make a big rock-and-roll hit." "I am a big car, and I'm a strip bar. Some call it fake, I call it good-as-it-gets."

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
