I was playing in a tournament recently where my opponent was playing eldar and had a farseer and warlock jet bike group mounted on the now supplied large flight bases. He stated that they should be played with the smaller 25 mm flight base as he showed me one and he will be playing them as such. Now I know that older eldar bikes used to come with the smaller bases and got changed over to the larger bases sometime in 4th ed, but ive seen this quite a lot lately where an opponenet is playing the bikes with smaller bases for advantage. GW must have not sold any jetbikes in years with the amount of opponents that I've played with small bases.
Now being an easy going guy, I let it slide and we played it out. How do you guys feel with those that abuse with GWs base size. Terminators come to mind as well.

Personally I'm of the opinion that for tournament play, you should use the current base size that is supplied.

For me it's an all or nothing. Either all of your Jetbikes use the small base or they all use the large base. In regards to the Termies, the old metal Termies came on 25 mm bases. RAW that is what they are supposed to be on. Most people however have attached their metal Termies (on 25 mm base) to a 40 mm base. I personally don't care either way, as long as my opponent is not using both in the same unit (any given unit must be completely comprised of old or new).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

All of mine came with the 37-odd mm flight bases.
So that's what they were on.
My metal terminators are likewise still on their 25mm bases. They only get used for Spacehulk anyway (I no longer play 40k).
I stopped playing in tourneys because of certain players whose belief that their wishes over-ruled the TO's say-so.

I think that if someone is using a larger or smaller base size to win games then you should call them on it. For example if someone uses a Tyrgon's larger oval base for a Hive Tyrant then it will have better synapse range. You have every right to ask that Tyrant to have it's synapse power's range reduced by an inch or so to make up for this.
Sometimes a conversion will require a larger base for example this pic of my Carnifex below (Bronto Scorpius). I converted it heavily with larger legs and meant I had to use three blank CD's to make it's base (I made this Carnifex in the days before the larger oval Trygon base existed). This larger base is actually means it is higher up and has a harder time taking cover so it gives my opponent an easier time when they shoot at it. I think it's best to try to be understanding and try to be firm but fair with unusual base sizes.
Consider too that Tyranid Hormagaunts due to how the models are shaped with their arms sticking out infront almost never get into base contact with an opponent when they assault. The rules say you're supposed to get your models in base contact when you assault but this isn't often possible with Hormagaunts so it is ignored when using them.

I often squib that rule to "base contact, or at least as close as the models will allow". If your scything talons are tangled with my marine, I'm not going to quibble over the 1/8th of an inch that the bases are separated, especially if you had the charge range to begin with. Simple physics: two solid objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.
As far as skimmer bases are concerned, I really don't have an issue with it. Sure, it can give you a little bit of an advantage in getting cover, but I'm pretty easygoing* on things like that. As long as it's a base that's produced by GW, I could generally care less.
* Although, if you're playing "Craftworld Gray Plastic Eldar" then I might have an issue with it - my easy-going-ness tends to vary depending on the amount of effort people put into painting/converting their models.

They came on a 30mm Flight base and in some of the earliest cases, a 30mm Hex-Flight base. There's definitely a trade off of benefits for smaller bases and larger bases that's been discussed ad nauseum in YMDC.
Of course, rule of cool is king in the re-mounting arena. My army is mounted on 40mm bases since the models I use (Exodite Dragon Riders) are too large for 30mm and are dwarfed on a 60mm. Opponents have inquired in the past and I've told them that I split the difference between the old base size and the new base size and I've never been called on it or asked not to play as a result.

Its not so clear cut as to when different size bases were supplied with the bikes. Large and small bases have come with the bikes at various times, sometimes it seems that which size is in the box just depends on which they had handier at the time.
A large order to our FLGS of 15 bikes had 11 large bases and 4 small bases...this was about a year and a half ago.
To make matters even murkier GW themselves have used different sized bases on bikes in the same game at times, looking at the pics it appears even diff size bases in the same unit.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k). |
