Good evening dakka,

This was my first piece using an airbrush, mostly it has come out okay, but I'm not sure about the wrecked Rhino.
I can't put my finger on it, but something just doesn't feel right.

Any thoughts?

P.S. It's mostly purple because my main opponent has an Emperor's Children army.

It looks unnatural, that rhino.

Is the yellow supposed to be rust? As it is it looks like it was once yellow and it turned purple for some reason. Rest of the terrain is okay. I'd suggest painting it purple again, then look up references of how rust behaves. There's also a whole lot of tutorials out there about painting weathering techniques. The P&M tutorials part of this forum, the CMON painting articles and Youtube are great sources for tutorials on said matter.

Cheers.

Well it's an unnatural universe

But I get your meaning.

I started out by basecoating in scorched earth, then drybrushed on lots of scorched earth/blazing orange for the rust. Then I went round adding black ink runs (for oil) and just general gunky bits.

My intent was to try out the hairspray and salt weathering technique. But the Mrs had ran out of hairspray, so I used starch spray instead and in retrospect too much salt.
I airbrushed on the purple, then when I went to "scratch" it off the whole lot came off and it was like I had never put the purple on in the first place.

So then I drybrushed the purple on, which was the beginning of it going a bit wrong.

I would say go for some very decayed markings such as the big arrow on the back or something just to break it up maybe in white and make it look all flaked up? IDK just my suggestion.

Right behind you!

The paint looks too flat. I like the idea that its rusting away but i think it needs some old paint left on the sides where weather wouldn't of gotten to it. Another nice touch is to add a sort of water effect by spraying it with a gloss varnish in you airbrush then using a watered down devlin mud to make like a water run from any exposed bolt heads or parts where water could of collected and ran down the side. Do you have any weathering powders? I'd use some where the rhino meets the dirt to add a muddy effect to help it tie into the terrain. Hope this helps!

@Kuron - Good idea, some kind of focal point might help. As it's meant to be chaos I might go for the eight pointed star.

@Craftworld - That's what the purple is meant to be...the original colour, but I don't think I've applied it well. I've not used powders before, I've seen them used on a few videos, but haven't tried them yet. Probably one for the ever increasing wish list. You make a good point about tying it into the terrain, I hadn't noticed the stark difference.

Thanks for your help on this guys. I usually paint my models clean and without weathering or damage so this is a new area for me.

Bit of an update...a mate of mine suggested some mithril silver on the edges.
I also tried to blend it into the terrain a bit better.

The purple still doesn't look right though.

Texturally, the purple still looks like part of the rust, to me, which is what kills the effect. I'd suggest rusting things up further, then reattempting the salt chipping with another layer of purple once you have the proper supplies on hand (with the added bonus of a little experience, this time around). With a bit more definition, the purple will look like chipped paint over rusted metal, instead of a strange color filter applied to rusted metal.

I think that hit the nail on the head. In the interests of getting this little project completed, I've added a lot more purple so that it is the defining colour.

I'm not 100% happy with it, but I've got round 2 coming up with some imperial bastions. Hopefully I can apply what i've learned here and produce something I am happier with.

Thanks for your help.
