Hey there, I've seen a few things about this and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit more about what it is and how it works.

Thanks in advance!

It's primarily a way to play the TT online. It's basically an online service that allows you to make a minature board of your choosing, find someone online and fight them.

How it works is primarily discussed in the FAQ listed with vassal40k's mod files.

I see, does it require any downloads that you have to pay for or is it all based online? Just out of interest for my student wallet, it sounds like a good way to get in a few extra games every now and then.

It is all online, and it is free. The only issue is that they sometimes lag behind and will take months to fix up any new sprites for new codex releases or stuff from ForgeWorld. The new necrons still aren't in yet for note.

That sounds quite cool, I'll check it out. Thanks for your help!

I have had Vassal for a while and just now had my first game on it! Essentially it is a table online (or you can do offline mode and just swap the cpu between you and a friend). There are most of the models that you can use built in though they do tend to lag behind. The controls are a little cumbersome at first (just lots keyboard shortcuts) but after a while you can get to playing pretty smoothly. I had an awesome game and it lets you play more people at your convenience! I'd definitely recommend it!

Vassal is basically an engine used to recreate table top games. V40k is the mod you run inside of vassal to set up warhammer based games. There are literally hundreds of mods you could pick up. I played my first few games of warmachine on vassal to see if i was interested in the game before spending money.

It works well enough for being able to play a game with friends who you normally wouldn't be able to play with, or even to just find some random games online if that is what you are into. But keep in mind that it is very simplistic in nature. It will always be a top down view. The first thing this does is majorly screw with true line of sight. Can you see these marines over this hill, how tall is it? Do these trees obscure my vehicle? how low are the branches on it hanging? Is this building multiple stories, how do we rule that?

Over all it does its job but it most definitely is not a replacement for actually playing the game.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

I've found that it's good to assort cover saves and how tall things are generally with it. I know most people hate it, but the old 4th system LoS actually works very well if you are putting it to a top-down prospective in a game like that.

It's always good to have cover saves assigned at the beginning of a game too, to much discussions on is this 4+ or 5+...

Can anyone provide me with a link to where I can download the 40k module? I can't seem to find it. It says that they can't provide it on Vassal's site for copyright reasons.

We can't post it on Dakka for copyright reasons, but someone might PM it to you...
