Not really a fan of the chameleon metals (plus the price) so wondering if anyone uses regular skinks with blowpipes as chameleons?
(ofcourse, i'll be painting them different colours)

Yeah, I think especially if you painted them green and added high amounts of brush and such to the bases, you should be fine. (specific events excluded, of course, if they spell out no counts as).

My favourite thing to do with Chamskinks is to make the patterns on them line up perfectly with the bases when viewed from above.
