For those unaware, the rumors of an Elder Scrolls MMO have cropped up again recently. I missed it for a little while following the release of ME3. For those interested:
The MMO-ification of beloved franchises appears to be a trend that’s sweeping the industry right now. After Warcraft led the charge, Bioware thought their next Knights of the Old Republic game should be an MMO instead. Now even Bethesda will jump into the fray, as news today brings the announcement of…a coming announcement in May about an Elder Scrolls MMO.
The tip comes from multiple sources speaking to Tom’s Guide, and the game will reportedly be set 1,000 years before Skyrim, during the “second era.” There will be three playable factions, one represented by a lion, another a dragon and the third a bird of prey.
With wide open worlds and loot and leveling galore, the Elder Scrolls series might seem ripe for an MMO. But even long time fans are reacting to the news with unease. Even in its single player games, Bethesda titles are notoriously buggy, and so the prospect of building an MMO without major operational issues seems to be a point of concern.
Then there’s the fact that just because something is a good single player series, that doesn’t mean it will translate into an effective MMO. After SWTOR got a mixed response from fans, many wished Bioware had simply made a next- gen single player Knights of the Old Republic sequel instead. Blizzard fans bemoan the fact that WoW has caused production of all other Warcraft games to cease entirely. If we get an Elder Scrolls MMO, chances are any possible sequel to Skyrim will be delayed for years, and many gamers (myself included) would rather have that game than an MMO variant of the existing series.
MMOs are a risky gamble for any brand, no matter how established they may be. They’re harder to build, harder to maintain, and so far no one has been able to compete with WoW on a significant level. Yes, WoW’s numbers have fallen in recent years, but it’s still the most played subscription based MMO by a mile. Promotions like a free copy of Diablo 3 with a year’s subscription would indicate that it will likely retain its crown for at least another few years.
Games like SWTOR and Guild Wars 2 are attempting to unseat WoW, and if done correctly, an Elder Scrolls MMO could be a major player. But if it’s incredibly buggy and isn’t the type of game players are looking for (Elder Scrolls’ current combat system doesn’t at all lend itself to an MMO), it could be a colossal failure.
Granted, this is all being said without an official announcement yet. We’ll have to wait until May for Bethesda to comment, and perhaps this will ending up being a better idea than it seems. ~ Forbes
Its unconfirmed so far, but its been infered for years since Bethesda copyrighted elderscrollsonline.com several years ago that an MMO would come down the line eventually.

Aye, thats was ages back.
Not sure on this one if I'm honest. One of Eldar Scrolls selling points was how good it looks, to make it MMO viable would be too much of a tone back.
Also in comparrison to some other fantasy settings, well Tamriel doesn't really stack up. Its a fun world and all, don't get me wrong, but your character is often what is epic about it, not the npcs and characters of the region.
Will make it hard to get behind it as a MMO setting. Although on saying that I'd keep an open mind.

I think the author of the above article raises the most important possible problem: bugs.

Aye, that was possibly Warhammer's biggest problem at launch, some of its bugs where a nightmare.

A full scale Tamriel, would be epic and while it is not as fantasical as other fantasy games, the realism should draw in a fair amount of people should Bethesda put emphasis on the fact it is not another WoW clone.
I hope it never gets made or even considered though.

No thanks.
No MMO. Don't even make it co-op.
These games are some of the best single-player open-world RPGs with an incredibly in depth story, tons of gameplay, and background lore that puts everything else to shame. And, the entire point of each of them is that your character is one of the heroes foretold in ancient legend.
Don't ruin them by turning them into a grind-fest MMO with no real plot and generic characters running around killing all the shopkeepers.

As far as Elder Scrolls MMO's go I'll believe it when Bethesda says they're working on one themselves, otherwise I remain skeptical.
Maybe it's just me but I feel like the TES MMO rumour shows up every now and then and inevitably fades aways. These rumours come in waves I doubt this one is any different from previous rumours.

It might not be, though this one is a little more descript that past rumors have been (but not by much). Zanimax is involved and they've been rumored to have been working on the project for a long time (and their hiring over the past year supports an MMO may be in the works).
The Tom's Guide source says that the announcement is supposed to come in May and the game will be featured at E3 so we'll see if this one pans out soon enough.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Im sorry but I just dont see it working out. And in all honesty, I dont see why most companies that try to make a "new MMO" ever take the gamble. The failure rate is pretty damn high. Most MMOs launch, do terribly, and have to switch to "free to play" ASAP to try and squeeze some type of money out of it. Not to my Elder Scrolls. No fething way.

That's because every single one of them tries to go in as a WoW clone and then realizes they aren't going to get many people because "All my friends play WoW". GW2, Planetside 2, and Mechwarrior Online are probably going to give a lot better showing than WAR, Rift, or any of them ever did.
I doubt it will be good enough, but I hope.
I would personally love a sort of one off Bethesda game, set in Tamriel, and it's a co- op dungeon crawler. You and three players go into a dungeon (Think any Oblivion Gate or similar), divide the loot, slay some things, and then get booted out to team up for another go. Naturally, this game would have to include randomized dungeons. Think of it as if you WEREN'T a grand hero, but instead an adventuring party.
Though I would never want the Elder Scrolls mainstay series to be multiplayer, I would love a game like the above.

I'd love a co-op Elder Scrolls game as well (or at least a game mode perhaps that allows players to team up for specific challenges). Especially since the SKyrim Online mod is going nowhere fast XD.
The mass modding of the Elder Scrolls games on PC however may make that, problematic.
