Hi,
I've been looking at Vallejo's extra opaque and washes sets and was wondering if they are the equivalents of GW's washes and foundations? For instance, does Vallejo have a version of Devlan mud and Dheneb Stone? Also what are they like to work with? Any problems?

Haven't used the extra opaque paints, personally, but they're meant to do the same thing as foundations. Haven't heard any bad reviews, so I'd give them a shot. The wash I've used shades pretty aggressively and dries glossy - like a cross between GW washes and a thicker ink. I don't mind thinning it a tad before applying, so I consider this a plus, as I can tweak the intensity without having to apply several layers. As for the gloss, it's a non-issue if you varnish, but some might consider that a problem.

The EO's are the 'equivalent' to foundations in coverage but are not exact colour matches. I bought heavy sienna and heavy green as replacements for calthan brown and knaloc green but unfortunately there was a fairly noticable difference between their counter-parts. I am not sure about the dehneb stone/ Heavy Warmgrey comparison but I know Vallejo have a version of devlin mud called umber shade but in all honesty even though I prefer vallejo paints to GW I feel regarding the washed, imo, GW's are superior.

Paint Compatibility Chart is your friend! You have several Vallejo paints marked with and *or two - this will tell you where you can expect visible differences.
Currently I'm using Heavy Blackgreen, Heavy Red, Heavy Khaki and several others - they match Citadel paints 100%.

I don't think Mechrite and Heavy Red look the same, and I can tell you for sure that heavy grey and adeptus do not look the same as well. Heavy red is more purple and heavy grey is very green. As for the OP... so far my thoughts are that I like the citadel foundations better than the extra opaques. Not sure I have a reason besides my own personal preference. Citadel foundations just seem a bit better quality plus you get the exact color you've been eyeing on other peoples stuff. If I were you I would honestly just wait to see how the new GW range is going to be. I use foundations plus vallejo at this point. I wont buy extra opaque over the citadel stuff again... unless they screwed up the new "base" paints. I think the dakka compatibility chart is very useful, but I still think it's apples, oranges and bananas for citadel, vallejo, and p3. They are similar but until you get the paint and try it out you really wont be able tell what color you are getting unless you are referencing the exact paint someone else is using. Just my thoughts though. I have a couple pots of P3 I've been meaning to try as well. This is all coming from a very novice painter mind you so do take it as purely a grain of salt.....

Heavy Red and Mechrite are not the same color. Mechrite is a bit lighter. That said, Heavy Red covers better than Mechrite did.
Right now that is the only EO I own but am so pleased with it that I'll end up buying the whole set next time I'm near my Vallejo dealer.

I'd also say that I've noticed that Sombre grey isnt an exact match for citadel shadow grey - shadow grey is alot more blue than sombre. Probably never get exact matches.
I'd also like to know how do the yellows and blues match up? I've got all of the current citadel blues and yellows and I'm just starting a nordland army so I'd like to know if I can replace them with citadel? Also is the HO equivalent to Iyanden darksun much different?

I user Vallejo paints but still prefer the GW washes tbh.
My issue at the minute is trying to find a decent, cheap matt varnish in the UK.

Although I haven't got round to using it yet (still need to finish a model to 100% haha) I did recently purchase

£2.47 for 60ml seems like a good deal to me and its free shipping if you spend over £10 on the site (which is REALLY easy)
