Depends what tactics you think you'll like.

Marines - pros: lots of minatures, wide variety, easy to paint, cons: everyone plays them, hard to be 'different'

Chaos - pros: lots of conversion opportunities cool fluff
cons: crap rules, (new rules out soon)

Imperial guard : pros: tanks, lots of dudes. strong army
cons: LOTS of minis required/expensive/painting time

Tau : pros: mobile, 'anime' style (if you like that) shooty
cons: old range, weak codex

Grey Knights: pros: strong, not many minis required
cons: quite popular, probably going to be gimped in next edition

Space Wolves; pros: strong shooty or mech or melee
cons: again faddy and popular. Space vikings

Blood Angels: pros: strong, melee orientated,
cons: red is hard to paint (successor chapters are also cool), have been a bit faddy, likely to get a slight gimp

Orkz : pros: fun, manic, conversion opportunities
cons: not that strong, need lots of models

Tyranids: pros: ALIENS, gribbly, fear factor, unit variety.
cons: quite weak codex

Eldar: pros: strong psykers, overall 'good' codex. Variety of units
cons: old codex, probably need new minatures soon.

Dark Eldar: pros: hits like a 10 ton hammer, unit variety, sexy models
cons: Toughness 3, softer than wet paper. hard to use well

Sisters of Battle: pros: nuns with guns, fire and melta. power armor
cons: metal minatures, expensive to collect. codex is a white dwarf

demons: pros - none that I can think of!
cons: way too many!

Daemons have a few pros but as Phototoxin said, "cons: way too many!".

Daemons is a funny army in friendly games (ImO) and when everything fall in place (sadly not all to often) they can be highly devastating.
But the only real pro is that you can use them in fantasy aswell as 40k and they are actually a really good team in fantasy.

An ork army is a great way to learn.

You don't train yourself to depend on a 3+, you get to paint tons of models, you'll have fun playing because everyone likes fighting orks, you can get lots of models cheap right now from the AoBR box.

And orks are very competitive, nob bike and kan wall lists are still very very good.
