I haven't painted the base and put on grass yet but I'm excited to share my first Ork. It belongs to no clan in particular since I don't play the tabletop game. I just enjoy painting. I started this hobby last March 2011.

I assume Orks if they were real would be grimy like this.

Waaahg!

Very nice! I like the rust effect on his armor as well. I like the overall "dark" theme of the coloring.

I love it. It's a grim dark / steampunk ork, very different from the bright colours space pirate you commonly see.

This does look good. Nice to see the dull/dirty colours on this.

Some Orks are too bright and colourful.

Hope your going put up the unit pic once done.

The metal is beautiful. In an orky way that is. What technique did you use to get that effect?

@Chaize, Ugavine, Ivan Issaccs, Godeth, Brother-Captain Scotti, Seb, NimbleJack3: Thank you guys.

@deejaybainbridge: Thank you. I will post a complete 360-degree profile when I'm done. You see, I can only paint during the weekends because I go to the gym after work so I'd look like an Ork, he he.

@DoomMouse: Thank you too.

Helmet/mask/Shoulder guards: Snakebite Leather. I then applied my own mix of wash of vermin Brown (1:9 paint to water + a drop of Future). I then made a mixture of Tamiya Soot pigment and water and applied it randomly at first and then pushing it where I think it would look good.

Axe/Bolter: Dark Metal technique - Scorched Brown, Tin Bitz, and Dwarf Bronze (1:1:1) as a basecoat. I then applied a 1:1 mix of Badab Black and Chaos Black. After that my own mix of wash of Vermin Brown (same as above) and followed with another wash of Bestial Brown pushed to where I think rust would be. I used Boltgun Metal to highlight most edges and Mithril Silver at the tip of the blades of the axe.

Hope that helped.

It certainly did. I'm going to try it on the metal on the base of my current conversion project. I'll let you know how it turns out

@TH3FALL3N, MrMerlin: Thank you.

@Sasa0mg: I didn't take notes while I painted this Ork as I basically just trusted my instincts plus there are lots of online photos of rusted metal

As I've learned from many online miniature painting tutorials, I used thinned paint. It usually takes 4-5 layers in my case.

By thinned paint, I can either mean really thin paint (1:3 paint to water ratio) or I dab my brush into a tissue paper to remove extra paint from my brush.

Skin:

1) Undercoat: Chaos Black (actually for all parts)

2) Basecoat: Dark Angels Green and subtly highlighted via wet blending with Catachan Green. I avoided a third lighter color and a color fade because that would make the skin tone look unnatural.

3) Washed: Lightly washed with Baal Red followed by a heavy wash of Ogryn Flesh.

The 'slimy' complexion is the result of applying pledge wipe & shine floor polish (Future in the USA, not sure what it's called in your respective countries)

Overall, my 'technique' isn't really my own but rather just a combination of what I've learned online and then experimenting. If I don't like a paint job, I drown the kit in Simple Green Concentrated to strip the paint away.

While I don't want to be a Golden Demon winner, I'd really like to paint my miniatures as realistic as my time and current skills allow. I admire the guys here who can scratch-build and make wonderful bases.

Loving the muted, gritty palette. Not something I'd choose for gaming, but for display models/dioramas, I think the more "realistic" direction is the way to go.

If you envy those with great bases, start practicing! If your painting is any indication (both in final quality and your apparent openness to learning from internet examples and experimentation), I'm sure you'd develop the skills soon enough. Semi-elaborate bases would really complement models painted like this, especially if they're intended for display. Cast resin bases are another option you could explore to add a bit more detail to the model until you develop the skills, yourself.

Thank you Oadie.

As for the bases, I'm considering ordering some from Coolmini or Not but for my 2nd Ork, I'll try to make my own. I just have to look for some materials in my backyard or be on the lookout every time I'm out on the streets for interesting bits that could be converted to or used in basing.
