My friend and I had been playing under the assumption that an IC that joins a squad becomes fully in that squad for all purposes thus protecting squishy IC from focus fire as you can spread the wounds out over the squad of whatever instead of your IC. Since I recently learned that you have to actually choose whether you attack the IC or the squad he has joined with when you assault them we were wondering what exactly are the benefits of joining a squad with an IC?

His commander is the necron lord which he would hide in a large squad of basic necrons. My commander is a rune priest that i would hide in my longfangs.

If an IC joins a unit, he is considered to be a normal member of the unit at all times EXCEPT when attacking in CC.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Shooting he is a member of the unit (page 48 and 49)

Close combat, for resolving attacks he is treated as a separate unit (page 49)

Does an IC confer his leadership at least, or any other similar effects?

Yes, as when you finish resolving attacks he's a member of the unit again.

I play C:SM and the squad my libby joins get to use his leadership when making moral checks. As noted before, he can't be singled out to shooting attacks. Also, I think if the IC has some universal special rules than the unit he or she joins also gets to use those special rules and vice versa as well.

The benefits of certain USR's confer (i.e. Stealth). Often times an IC will have a special rule that is granted to the IC and any unit he joins.

Greyham - most USRs are lost if an IC with them joines a unit without (e.g. move through cover) and vice versa.

Check page 76 (from memory) and the asterisk marked USRs

The benefits is your opponent can't single out the IC for shooting, and he confers his usually better Leadership score to the squad. Also many ICs have special rules that will boost the squad.

Some ICs give a squad special rules, but the main benefits IMO are better squad LD, ablative wounds for the IC, especially against high strength shooting, and making a nasty unit nastier (assault terminators joined by killy IC would be an example)

Some shooting attacks can pick an IC out from a squad, Vindicare Assassasin for example, but as has been said usually that is not the case.
