Subject: How Indepentent are Great Companies?
|
 |
Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
|
I was re-reading my Space Wolves codex (for the umpteenth time) and noticed a thing about Great Hunts. The Lord just seems to wonder off with his entire company. A whole company. That is a lot of marines. Occasionaly, these comapines go missing.
So my question is, just how independant are great companies? Does each one operate as its own mini chapter, just following the oders of the Great Wolf, or are they more bound to the chapter in a codex-esc manner?
Thanks in advance guys!

All wolf lords are beholden to the great wolf, but those who have differences with him have been known to wander off with some loyal followers (read possible company). Apparently it happens. But here is where Grimnar has the Wolf Lords tied up on one small note......
All Wolf Priests, Rune Priests, Iron Priests, Scouts, Dreadnoughts, and most Tanks belong to the Company of the Great wolf.

Actually IIRC each Great Company is now totally independent.
They are pretty much all independent but all are oath-bound to follow to Great Wolf...

Aye.
What's more, they're as independent as being able to choose their own Wolf Lord from the Wolf Guard should someting happen to the current Jarl.

Logan commands his own great company and gives over all strategic leadership to the chapter, but he doesn't give orders beyond that. He sends a company here or there, but he doesn't give orders beyond that unless maybe more than 1 company is in the same place. But that would be rare. Even at the first war for armaggeddon the space wolves only had 2 or 3 companies. So he's more of a first among equals than a top-down kind of autocrat.

The entire chapter was present for the First War of Armageddon...
He is more of a High King, he lets each Wolf Lord do their thing but if he tells them to do something they hop to it.

The space wolves codex says 300 space wolves at Armagaddon. Unless I am much mistaken. Which I am not.

It's no note that the whole chapter never leaves Fenris.
On the most dire situations, at least one Great Company is in charge of keeping Asaheim safe.
Such measure it's to be expected, so in case of a great disaster, the Chapter won't be completely lost.

I'm pretty sure the Codex states that, and when the Chapter is movilized to rcover the Spear of Russ, or when they go destroy the New Prospero, they left a company at home.

Maybe what the codex meant to say is that only 300 space wolves lived through the terrible carnage
That would be world eaty.

Lobotomized automatons got nothing on the Sons of Russ!
There are some major discrepancies in the fluff regarding Armageddon and it's many wars that never fully live up to the name...
