I have been told that all IG tanks come with Searchlights, thus rendering the Necron Solar Pulse irrelevant. Do SM vehicle come with the light as standard as well or is it an optional upgrade?

Hardly irrelevant. Searchlights can help but the don't automatically end nightfight.
When firing at a unit while nightfight is in play, you roll for nightfight as normal. If the target unit is within the range of your nightfight roll, then the vehicle is illuminated for the rest of your army for that turn. Otherwise the shooter can't fire and nightfight still effects any additional firing at that target unit.
Some SM vehicles have them and some require an upgrade.

ah! I was told that searchlights negated nightfight completely for the targetted unit. He is a LIAR!!!

IF he rolls to spot and suceeds, then for the rest of the turn that unit can be targetted without rolling further for night fight.

Yeah, the way my friend was explainign it he made it sound like it did that but because it was a searchlight you didn't need to roll at all.
To be fair i might have misunderstaood what he was saying.
So Solar Pulse is still viable vs IG then?

Anything that costs 20 points and negates shooting from 2-3 units is viable against any army. But be careful against IG. IG players tend to bring barrage weapons to the game (who wouldn't actually). They can fire regardless of nightfight conditions. Scatter distance is bigger than normal, but a hit is a hit...

Definitely because at 2D6 x 3 - the average roll will be 21" and maximum is 36". You can still shut down a lot of shooting.
