Hey Dakkanauts. I know we have some especially dedicated westerners on here, and I figured there's no better place to ask such an obscure question.

A close friend of mine has been wearing Cowboy boots for years as general shoes/ innawoods type stuff, and I'm really considering getting a pair, or at least trying some on. They're so easy to put on, and I love the profile of a nice cowboy boot. After doing a quick google search for "good cowboy boots", I've come up empty-handed, with no real brands in mind. What are some good brands of cowboy boots? I know Stetson makes boots, and I actually really like the colors they have available, but I can't be sure if they're just riding off their Hat brand name..

Also, I wear a size 11 US, and I've found that most Cowboy boots in size 11 have really wide and floppy "upper leg parts" to accommodate a larger person (don't really know what else to call it). I don't have big legs, so if at all possible. I'd like to boots to hug to my leg (which I guess would mean quality worksmanship).

I haven't really looked for this, but I'm guessing it exist... are there are cowboy boots for "work"? Like, a tough boot with a tradition look, but more durable features?

Thanks. Cowboy Boot/ Hat general.

Ropers are shorter by about 6 inches. I was always more of full length boot fan myself because ropers always felt like they should be outside the pants leg.

Its been 22 years or so though, so I wouldn't know what brands are good now.

Red Wing, for a good work boot that still has a western feel RW sells bot lace up and slip on boots that fit the bill. My dad has literally been wearing RW boots my entire life, he only wears snap button shirts and wide brimmed hats...

I would shy away from Stetsons if only because I bought a fantastic newsboy style wool hat the other day of heat shaped wool, made by Stetson...in Indonesia. At least check to be sure they are made in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, or New Zealand.

Justin makes excellent boots and always has. I also recommend Danner and Ariat.

In answer to your question: MOST if not all plain, traditional boots ARE work boots. If they have pointed toes and lace up...defiantly a work boot.

Lace ups wouldn't normally be considered "cowboy" boots however, anyway not back when I was growing up (insert Mastadon reference here). Good to hear Ariat is still in business.

I'll admit I was never much of a lable guy, just whatever was cheap and sort of fit. I wasn't the wealthiest back then.

I don't know about cowboy boots ( I personally think they are lame, but thats just because of the wanna be cowboys in alberta =\) But Red Wing makes the best boots in the world. I have been working construction for 12 years and I have owned red wings since almost day one. You can re sole them which is great, They have different kinds of sole's like heeled or flats ( I like flats Auston DONT SAY A FREAKING WORD!!! ), they also have steel toed or non-steel toed ( irish setters). They just kick ass.

I used to play hockey on a travel team in your neck of the woods. There are an awful lot of almost Dallas-type cowboys around Calgary.
What would I ever say about flat feet Fabs . I have worn both flat soled Vibrams and heeled boots in the service. I vastly prefer hard sided, heeled, smooth leather soled jump boots to anything else. Its a quirk, and I acknowledge that.

I took the liberty to check thier website Samus. The Red Wing 2214 is likely exactly what you are looking for. 2231s are round toed but still have that western look. Both of those are steel toed, im sure if you want a different toe they make the same style without.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

You wear Jump Boots too? I've had a pair since my feet stopped growing (about three years), and I have to say, nothing beats a good old Corcoran Black Jump Boot. Never been issued them or anything cool, but everyone in my family's had to wear them at one point or another, so found out about them by word of mouth.

Red wings, eh? They have an outlet near my favorite sushi restaurant... I've always thought they were kind of a snobby brand, going off their prices alone... But I'll give them a try. The 2214 looks like a fantastic work boot, but it's a little plain. Need some sort of color of design. Also... 250$ ! Thank you though.

Justin Boots seem great, although a tad expensive.

Are there any looks to avoid with cowboy boots? I'm partial to just plain old roughed up brown, although a light grey or a dark cherry wouldn't be too tacky, would it?

By dark cherry do you mean cordoba, in which case the answer is no thats not tacky, an actual red is.

Looks you should probably avoid are "ostentatious" and "primary colors" I particularly dislike stiching on the toe, or anything beyond the cuff really.

It's funny I just said I don't like stiching on the tow but these are a unique combination of quality, steel toe, and decoration that isnt quite over the top. Good price too.

Red wings ARE pricey but TBH 250 for your feet isnt bad. Plus they last a lifetime, my dad gets 2 pairs of boots a year from the County for work. He takes one pair of 2233 and one pair of 2232's but insulated( too lazy to find the model). He literally has 50 pairs of serviceable boots stored at various cabins and homes in Montana. Very difficult to beat in quality and construction.

You also need to think of this. Even a great made boot will wear out on you if it doesn't fit right. If its to tight on your toes it will start to work out and ruin the boot. Are you thinking about wearing them as a normal shoe? so walking on all surfaces? or are you looking for a good work boot? mostly to wear on a smoother or softer surface? Where i live there is really only one place to get boots, And they only carry the best, Personally i don't care for cow boy boots. So model numbers and brands don't come to mind. I would say the best way to find the right boot, is go to a place that sells work boots along with cowboy boots. If a company makes a good work boot, More than likely their cowboy boot will be good also. Just what ever you do stay away from the bright colors. They are god awful and are only brought by people who don't know what they are doing. If you want a high top boot, but its to lose at the top. (Not really knowing your gender) They make women's boots in the same style and everything you'll need. A women's boot cut is tighter at the top. I'd try that, If you can't find what you are looking for. You might just want to buy a good used pair, and see how it feels and work from there.

Words for fething life.
I used to tell my new joes as they came in as part of thier first counseling to save money, don't fall in love at a strip club, and find a pair of boots you can walk through a country in. The smart ones followed all three and didn't end up at sick call when they figured out that NCOs that specifically tell them to buy good boots believe that being a paratrooper doesnt end when you make a PLF.

My workboots lasted me about six years, they were good boots. But I worked them to death and wore them every day and their insoles became bad :/ I tried some dr. scholls but they kept slipping around inside the boot...
