Hi guys just got back into 40k never really played but used to collect and paint. I bought the black reach set so i could play to get the rules down and as its going well.
so as im getting better with the rules each time i play i decided im going to start a space wolves army and i have just been reading up on all units and working out lists and so far i like this list the best so wanted to see what you guys think

HQ
canis wolfborn + 2 fenrisian wolves

TROOPS
grey hunter's x10
meltagun x2

grey hunters x10
melta x2

ELITES
wolf scouts x5
melta x1

wolf scouts
sniper rifle x5

FAST ATTACK
thunderwolf cavalry x3
melta bombs x1
thunder hammer x1

HEAVY SUPPORT
long fangs x5
missile launcher x4

all comes to 990pts

What i wanted was to attach canis to the thunderwolf cavalry send them up the flanks
Send the grey hunters up the middle using cover when they can
Try to roll and get the scouts with the melta in on his table edge
Use long fangs to cover everyone from a distance and
Get the snipers to pin and hold up troops and cover the grey hunters from a distance

Any tips on using these units would be great and any tips on changes would be great
As the title states its 1000 points as my friend has 2/3 armies of this size

cheers guys
jim

Hey man, for a noob this is a very solid list and is something similar to what i would use. But for the love of god put those hunters in Rhinos, they will be nummy snacks for the enemies heavy support and the speed and flexibility a rhino gives you for only 35 points is imperative to victory. I would take out the scouts altogether, *even though they're great i know*, stick in some rhinos for the hunters, and find some way to stick a rune priest in there, take out 1 hunter from a rhino and stick him in their so he can shoot JOTWW from the hatch, if you play against tyranid monstrous creatures you can thank me later. But thats would i would do and its just my opinion, do with it as you will, good luck and most importantly have fun!

First, it's "newb" not "noob". Noob is derogatory whereas newb means new to the game.

I like the theme but you aren't maximizing the potential that Canis can bring to your army.

Here's what I would do:
1. Max out your thunder-wolf cavalry(2 more squads) and run Canis with them or run him behind a transport so he can be hidden but still use his abilities.
2. I love scouts. Keep one group in reserve and use their outflank rule to try to take out key components behind enemy lines and maximize their melta potential as much as possible. Get rid of the sniper rifles for group A. With the other group of scouts (B), equip them with just the sniper rifles and deploy them in a building or terrain that is 18" to 34" away from your enemies.
3. Get rid of the long fangs and use their points to give your troops transports and to buy packs of wolves to use with Canis wolf pack rule.

If you find that you don't have enough points after buying the cavalry then drop scouts B to get the points to put your troops in transports. You'll want the transports to make your troops mobile and protected. You'll also be able to run your cavalry behind the transports. If the transports become wrecked then it's not that bad because now you have more cover to run around with.

I'd only bring the heavy support in for games over 1k points for SW.

Edit: I like how your list is looking because it's not the cookie cutter SW list that a lot of SW players run. The more varied your list the more fun you'll have and the more you'll win because your opponent won't expect what's coming next turn. RP in Rhino with Jaws + missile spam - scouts = boring.

Cheers for the suggestions guys I have 2 razor backs need a re-paint and can just take the guns off to be a rhino
also just went out and picked up
2 boxes of wolf guard in terminator armour
Land raider
A box of fenrisian wolves
Logan grimnar
A Chaplin to convert into a wolf priest

And I will be getting another box of thunder wolf cavalry But don't have them yet as wanting to get the new paints next week

So my question now is how would I fit in what I have just picked up into the list above
I did think of dropping the grey hunter to 2 squads of 8 then run them in the land raider and then run a squad of terminators in a drop pod and loose the long fangs and scouts

Ok, I see what you are going for but I see some problems with what you have in the list. The real problem is you have a deathstar that isn't all that great tbh.
Canis has no ++ save and a 3+ isn't a great when it comes to shrugging off masses of firepower, your thunderwolves are in the same boat there is a lot of point tied up in a unit that will take every single shot your opponent can pump at it.

Canis is fine if you have a lot of ss but you would be better off with a wolf lord on a mount with a wolf claw, ss and runic armour. In a squad of 3 twc you should have 2 ss to keep them alive. His real power is to give you fenrisian wolves as a troops choice and to turn them into something decent to use on the board. Without that he is just a half formed character.

The second scout squad isn't great at all and I would drop them both to max out the other choices, you have missiles and twc why do need more anti armour? I would spend that on buffing the twc and you can just squeeze in 2 rhinos for the troops if you want them.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
