Oracles, Master, Gurus and Senseis:
I am closing in on completing a Green Tide painted list. Not getting the units confused is going to be tough. I have not based the minis yet. Do you have any suggestions? 6 types of gravel/sand? Don't want to use flock for mess and storage reasons. paint 6 different color rings around their bases?

Subquestion is it likely that the 6th Ed will change the size of the ork boy mobs (30 to something else)?
Thanks

Well as you have already painted them a small insignia or unit colour is out of the question, what I'm personally doing as I build up my ork mobs is to put a small block of colour on the front and back of the rim of the base, a different colour for each. You could also Add lines, 1 white line on the rim for 1st squad, 2 for 2nd etc. With this you can keep all of the base flock match but still have something you can quickly look at to determine the mob.

Not as useful when they're mixed on the table as they are for setup & deployment - but I colour coded my mobs put a dab of the corresponding paint under the base - I got blue boyz, green boyz, brown boyz, & brown&green ard boyz

Are you opposed to putting your brush to the actual models, again? Rim markings would work, but I almost always find them a bit tacky. Simple squad markings wouldn't take too much time or effort and could be applied subtly, either as tattoos/warpaint to arms, stripes on helmets, color-coded plates on weapons, etc.

Whatever you choose, I'd suggest trying to keep the basing consistent. Basing each unit differently would do more to destroy visual cohesion than small rim markings.

For my orks, I have each member of one squad have different-colored pants from each other squad.

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.
