Hi, so i am working on my ultramarines captain at the moment, and i was wondering how i might achieve an effect similar to the one in this photo

http://demonwinner.free.fr/uk/2010/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=10#2nd

obviously i'm not going to try and match the quality, but i'm not sure which colours to use to get that purple. i don't have any purple paints on me, and i can't for the life of me mix up anything that looks close.

any tips?

Can you get linch purple?? It sort of looks like it, I cant say for 100% certain that it is the same color, but the name popped in my head when I seen it..

I don't know what brand of paint you use, but Vallejo game color has two purples; Hexed Lichen and Royal Purple. Try those. You can add white to lighten it as well.

i use mostly GW paints and Vallejo Model Air. i find that it is a real pain to water down the model and game colours without tipping out a third of the paint off the shelf

You could try using the tip of a brush to take out paint from the GW pots?

O right sorry failed to read that part.....I have trouble mixing paint from GW pots until I used the head of the brush rather than pouring the paint out of the pot.

oh, there i was talking about how the vallejo model and game colour ranges are too thick for me, so i have to water them down in the dropper bottle. the thing is they fill them up so much, i have to tip out a noticeable portion of the paint in order to add enough water to thin it enough

Creative problem solving will help. If you need to pre-thin VGC, get some empty dropper bottles (thewarstore.com sells them pretty cheap) and transfer your thinned paint. I find it better to just thin them on the palette because, depending on what I am doing (layering, blending, highlighting), I need different consistency. I just use an eye dropper I bought from the drug store for 50 cents to add water. It's a shame you don't like them; more colors and more paint for less. But hey, man, to each their own.
