So! I'm really fond of the aesthetics of the Black templars. Their sigils, the chains, the tabards/robes. However, I find the black and wait extremely dull and not particularly interesting to paint so I've been considering taking the aesthetics of the Black templars. Their sigils, chains and robes and such, and give them to my imperial fists. I figured perhaps it could be a Black Templar Crusade which has gone off and started their own chapter, feeling closer to the Imperial Fists rather than their templar brothers, but keeping some of their black templar identity... Would this work?

Yes, it would work. The Black Templars are a 2nd founding Chapter of the Imperial Fists so there is even a direct fluff justification.

You can say they are a Black Templar successor chapter(of which there are quite a few)

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

So then I could use both the Imperial fist 'hand' insignia as well as the templar cross to enhance the looks of my tanks and troops?

quite a few in the fluff or quite a few home made? Fluff = no, home made = plenty.
