A friend of mine who's a big 40k fan (tabletop games, novels, and video games) and I were talking about it, and I told him the fiction just seemed too hard to get into. He assured me it wasn't and gave me a copy of Dawn of War II: Retribution and offered to play a small game with his IG armies, and long story short, its about a month later and I'm sitting on top of about 800 points of Orks. After extensive internet research I've begun painting them and have found I'm actually pretty handy at it (although for the time being I have no camera, so I can't back that claim up ). I'm really enjoying myself, even if my wallet isn't!

However, I do have a few questions about how to set up Orks. I have:
1 Warboss with a bosspole, twin-linked shoota, and Power Klaw
9 standard nobz, 1 nob with a power klaw (a bit of modding I did after getting a shipment of boyz that had a loose klaw in it)
18 shoota boyz
35 slugga/choppa boyz
3 boyz with rokkit launchas
2 boyz with big shootas

And I just have no idea how to build my squads. I've been reading that for a group of Orks without vehicles to be at all competitive it needs Kommandos and I've thought about ordering a few backpacks and making some lame conversions with my un-armored boyz, but aside from that I have no real ideas. Any suggestions, Dakka?

Welcome to the Hobby, Harry!

I used to play horde Orks, so I may be of some help.

You don't need Kommando's to be competitive. They need Ghazzy! Ghazzy is a great support character, and he can take any other character on and usually come out on top. He's a monster in Close Combat.Be sure to put PK nobs into Slugga/Choppa boyz. They need the support!

For the Shoota Boys, I know of a lot of people who run them with Zogwort. Seems to work.

With the Nob Squad, I would put them into a Battlewagon with Ghazzy. It's a fun little unit that wrecks face wherever it goes.

As for a suggestion to new units, get a Battlewagon and 15 Burna Boyz. They can drop a single template from the BW, and every model underneath it suffers wounds equal to the number of Burnaz you have! Suck a nasty little trick.

Anyway, Orks is a great army to start out with. Have fun, and remember, don't let the trolls bite!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

IceAngel wrote:I must say Knightley, I am very envious of your squiggle ability. I mean, if squiggles were a tactical squad, you'd be the sergeant. If squiggles were an HQ, you'd be the special character. If squiggles were a way of life, you'd be Doctor Phil...

Welcome fellow Ork'ed!

My only advice is:

1) Power Klaws wherever possible
2) Take Ghazghull Thraka
3) Don't underestimate Bosspoles, that 5 points could save you a game!
