I have a game tomorrow against my soon to be brother in law, I'm gonna kick his ass for marrying my sister.

It's to be a mostly friendly game as we're both new to gaming in 40k, so we each have a couple of different lists to try out and see how they play. I don't know what to expect, aside from the contents of 1 battleforce, and some XV88's.

Here's my list(s), and yes! I'm running mandrakes in one of them! "Why?!" I hear you cry! Because I'm hoping to god that I can prove they're not useless, and that I didn't waste my cash in buying them! My aim is to use them to sneak up on the XV88's and stop them shooting me down from a far - we'll see how that goes!

The units that I've written up in white text will be my staple units that aren't likely to change throughout the unknown number of games that we'll have, whilst those in red are the different combinations that I have to play with. In future games I think I'll put Wyches in the Raider and some Trueborn in venoms (NOT blaster born though, maybe DL snipers that can sit back and shoot stuff) though I can't do that now as I don't have the models built up to WYSIWYG

Archon
- Shadow Field
- Ghost Plate Armour
- Combat Drugs
- Blast Pistol
- Huskblade
- Web Way Portal

Haemonculus
- Liquifier Gun
- Power Weapon
- Animus Vitae

4x Incubi (Archon's bodyguard)
- Klaivex - bloodstone
- Venom - splinter cannon

4x Wracks
- Acothyst - agoniser
- Venom - splinter cannon

10x Warriors
- Blaster
- Splinter Cannon
- Raider - splinter racks, flickerfield, night shields

5x Mandrakes
- Nightfiend

3x Bloodbrides
- Hydra Gauntlets
- Haywire grenades

OR

Archons Court
- 1x Sslyth
- 1x Ur Ghul
- 1x Lhamaen
- 1x Medusae

6x Wyches
- Haywire Grenades
- Hydra Gauntlets

Lastly, no idea what games we'll be playing, there'll obviously be straight up annihilation matches, though I also have the planet strike rule book and quite like the look of the death world rules in this months WD.

I'll post the battle report as soon as I can, most likely Monday night unless we finish early tomorrow.

Cheers,

Also, just found I have a few more points to play with so I'm giving a bloodstone to my Klaivex for some pre-assault nastiness

Wow, that was... interesting!

We had one third of a game, as it was taking us so long to get through the rules and figure everything out that it had got dark by the end of my opponents second turn!

I'm pleased to report that the Mandrakes won their first and only combat against an XV88, causing one wound and receiving none in return. However, I didn't realise that this meant he needed to take a morale check, and they all stayed locked in combat. The mandrakes passed all tests they were required to make throughout the next phases but sadly failed to take that last wound off the XV. They will return though!

We're going in to store on Saturday so we can get some help from people that actually know what they're doing, in the mean time here's what I remember of my opponents list, I don't think it was legal (I let him have Farsight, though he didn't get used anyway).

Farsight - reserved, didn't get used

3x XV8's with a mix of flamers, plasma weapons and a burts cannon (I think)

12x Fire wariors with 6 rifles and 6 plasma carbines, and plasms grenades mounted in a devilfish (burst cannon and TL missile pods)

2x XV88's with rail guns and plasma guns of some variety

2 squads of 3 stealth suits with shield drones.

Squad of kroot - reserved, didn't get used
8 fast attack drones - reserved, didn't get used

Some amusing things that happened:

I get turn one, only move my jetfighter 6", drop 2 missiles on top of a stealth suit squad, but only work out the wounds for one missile

He shoots an XV88 at my archon and his incubi retinue which is 6" away from the firing XV88. He rolls to scatter, and finds it right back on top of his head! Saves were made though :(

His remaining stealth suits immobilises my jetfighter with its first and only shot

So yeah, a reet amateurish and bloody clueless game!

Question:

Can XV88's fire both shoulder and arm weapons in the same turn?

I have a feeling that he was getting to shoot a lot more than he actually should have been! His XV8's had those sensors that let him shoot both guns, though I dont think the 88's did...?

Hey sounds like you guys had a lot of fun! And you will usually find that if you use less competitive units (mandrakes etc.) in a friendly 40k game they tend to be kinda fun to use and not so terrible. Anyhow on to the Tau questions: Yes an XV88 Broadside can take a multi-tracker which enables them to shoot both weapon systems in the same turn. The lots of shooting? Yeah with suits that's about one of the only things still giving Tau their teeth and unless I am not understanding something: an XV88 doesn't have a shot that scatters. The railgun "sub-munition" that throws out a large blast is only available to a Hammerhead tank armed with a railgun. Hope this helps and hope you finish your game

Aaaaah, I see! I'd never seen the Tau dex before so was taking a lot of info in without really reading it!

We weren't just against the clock and the women's patience, but we were playing outside too as that's where the best table was! Then the bloddy sun set! We should have introduced night fighting rules in turn 2!

It was fun, in a what the hell happens next kind of way! Looking forward to a proper game on Saturday though, in day light with someone that knows how to play properly!

I know exactly what you mean since I am a greener player. I know my Tau dex and I am working on Nids and Chaos. But outside of that I know little about other races codex. Yes a proper game inside a lighted room is in order! As for the women..... well can't help ya there!
