I notice that This is the only thread here about this game about giant monsters fighting in urban areas, and that the latest post there is about two years old. I liked the look of the game when it came out but was leery of the collectible aspect and did not buy in at the time, but now it is looking like the newer releases are steering away from the cfg model and just selling you what you want, more or less. That would be good.

What is the general opinion of the game this far along? Does it have the staying power it needs?

I think I will be releasing my inner little boy and allowing him to buy me into this game, now that there are ways to do so in a somewhat orderly choice driven manner.

Alternatively, if you just like the idea of Kaiju throwing buildings at each other and crushing puny human tanks you could buy the Monsterpocalypse minis and get a copy of Ganesha games' Mightly Monsters rules to use them with. That removes any trace of CFG and gives you more wargame and less boardgame.

True.
But I think it will be easier to get folks near me (spec the wife and kids) into the board game aspect of the game. I have been watching games and tutorials on Youtube and it seems like an easy enough game to learn the basics of.

And really I don't mind the collectible aspect so much if there are enough spares floating around to pick up the figures I can settle on for cheap. The prepainted deal is a bonus to me since I lost most of the little fine coordination I had, not to mention close vision. Nothing particular, just passed forty a few years ago.

I like the Terrasaurs most, I think, and my nine year old likes the martians. The model that really did the trick and pushed me off the wall was the Green Fury Van, a small support unit in the Terrasaurs faction. It reminds me of the Mystery Machine. That one figure was funny enough in the context to make me Laugh out loud.

I picked up a starter box for my boy and I to play with, it's quite fun and easy enough for a 7yr old to pick up pretty quickly.

There don't seem to have been any new releases for a while though, but that may be because of the rumored movie that's supposed to be in production.

Okay, here's the full story.

1) The game is dead. There hasn't been anything new for it released for something like 18 months and no explanation given. Some people think it's due to the upcoming Monsterpocalypse movie and Dreamworks is forcing PP to keep quiet, which is ridiculous. I don't know of any movie studio that intentionally killed its franchise to help promote the movie. If the movie actually comes out (doubtful) we might get a tie-in playset, that's it. Anyone expecting anything more is delusional.

2) Despite all of the above, I heartily recommend the game. The rules are simply the best game rules in existence, I am not even kidding. Better than 40k, better than Warmachine. This was probably part of its downfall, it has the gameplay of a real wargame but sales were aimed at a group used to much simpler games.

The amount of product currently out there is enough to keep a gaming group entertained for years (we've been playing non-stop since its release in 2008) even if PP doesn't release anything new ever again. The non-collectible re-release of the first 3 sets is also much cheaper to get into - but if you want all the models, you'll spend the savings on eBay for those rare collector pieces that weren't re-released.

To summarize:

The game: god tier
The company's treatment of the game: gak

Me and a few of the guys in my gaming group were just talking about starting this up again a few days ago. We played this game pretty competitivly during its hayday but lately its just been sitting on a shelf in my closet.

I have a rather large collection of these things and have alot of extras. If you need trades send me a PM and we can work something out.

its still pretty popular at my FLGS around here. people are quite defensive about it actually.

I wanted to try and buy some of the buildings for Battletech and the players were repulsed at the idea and I was snubbed.... hard.

I haven't played this in awhile. I was pretty into it when they did have support for it giving out megas. Why do all the good minis games get canned? Dreamblade, Monsterpocalypse, also actually liked WoW Minis and Battle Tech Clicks.

Thats actually an awesome idea to use the building for battle tech terrain.

Because of this thread I pulled out all my old monpoc stuff out of storage last night. Now I'm looking for someone to play against.

I actually have most of the first ed. models for this.. It was a blast to play, but no one in the area wanted to play it so we stopped carrying it at the local store.

Well, I have taken the leap and sent away for a two player box. And one nice guy is sending me some of his extras to help me get started. It has a pretty cool community I found over at team covenant. Found them through their videos over on youtube. The tube is my usual first step in getting after any game. If it is popular enough to be there, I figure it will be possible to find some folks to play with.

Monpoc is a really fun game. I think its not popular anymore cause of PPs distribution policy.

I think it dried up because the last few "new" sets are just repackaged older stuff, and the veteran players just got tired of waiting around for new things to come out. I believe theres some movie coming out and prob all the rights are all tangled up, or PP is hoping the movie will make the game popular again. Right now nothin's happening.

Honestly, there's about 5 sets out now and a ton of different game combinations you can make. The majority of monsters have their own styles of play so its hard to get tired of it.

Sadly, I think everything above is true.

PP is much more interested in producing underwhelming colossals than they are in giving Monpoc the attention it needs/deserves.

WarmaHordes: Menoth, Legion, Skorne, Convergence
