A friend of mine here who's starting to get into 40k asked me what happens if Imperials buy xenos goods, and they're caught by the authorities. To be honest, I couldn't really find any material on it, so I made a few guesses:

1) If they're from unsanctioned sources, the goods are confiscated by the Arbites, and you pay a heavy fine.
2) If the goods were from a Rogue Trader, then it's fine.
3) If they're tainted by Chaos, regardless if it's a RT or not, then the goods are confiscated along with you.

Am I right, so far?

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

I don't think Eldar would sell technology, though Tau would...

As for goods, well, she wasn't very specific, so I suppose general merchandise: jewellry, food, trinkets, etc. Apparently, she was thinking like on a frontier situation where wandering merchants - Eldar outcasts, Water Caste merchants, Rogue Traders, etc. - mingle with local colonists and such.

But I don't think you'll get shot for buying stuff from a Rogue Trader, as those guys are usually smart enough not to draw attention from the Inquisition and the Arbites by selling proscripted items. True, there are exceptions, but most of them are probably smarter that that.

Well in the first eisenhorn book when the inquistor finds out a noble house is willing to buy xenos goods he resolves to bring down the full weight of the inquisition down upon them. So i guess there is a heavy price to pay.

Rogue Traders themselves may not bring attention to themselves but the people buying might well do so...

Tau do trade with Imperium worlds on the edge near them, it was mentioned in their codex. However I think that was one of the reasons that sparked the Damocles Gulf conflict, as the Tau would soften them up with trades then invite them to join or just outright invade the planets.

Either way it is heretical and like most heresy, it is not so great for anyone with authority to find out. Xeno tech is even usually viewed as heresy by the Ad Mech adding in an additional faction that'd likely be very happy to execute you for it. Though another reason may be it leaks funds out of the IoM and their resources are stretched thinly enough as it is.

If that's the case though, why would Rogue Traders be allowed to trade with xenos races in the first place? Then again, who am I kidding? This is 40k after all.

They're rogue, probably trade the goods black market style. Sort of like radical inquisitors (unless they've been retconned away) which use very questionable methods to chase the same goal as normal ones.

I wonder what they did to all the Space marines wielding Eldar shuriken catapults from the Rogue Trader days................

I'm guessing the Imperium's frontier worlds see a healthy non-human trade. Hell, a god chunk of the Imperium's exotic stuff is just alien tech.

Only digital weaponry...and the ones who make them, the jokaero, are the only xenos race that is an Imperial protectorate. Probably because their sentience in questionable, and they're useful to the Imperium.

Unless you want to use very old 40K stuff as a basis for fluff. Then you have Space marines using shuriken catapults(actual models), C'tan phase-knife wielding assassins, Crozius Arcanums for Chaplains used to be made from alien tech, and Force Rods used to be unknown alien tech. Plus the aforementioned digital weaponry is originally from the same time period in the game.

Thing is, digital weaponry is probably the only one still valid in 5th Edition.

I think that like many things in the Imperium it would depende on the world. If a worldwide civil war can go unnoticed for centuries, a planet out on the frontiers that hardly ever sees visits from the Imperial authorities could probably get away with mere trading for a long time. There was a mention in a short story in in one of the second edition books (I think it was the Codex Imperialis) of a Craftworld heading to a human world to trade (OK, not exactly a super-detailed example, but it's something - I doubt such a thing is technically allowed in the Imperium, though). Some Orks will trade with humans as well.

In short: it goes on, but it's not supposed to.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

She did not swap guardsmen for a pokeball. She inadvertently gave a guy some guardsmen, who was so grateful he sent her a pokeball...designed to capture her.
