I just ordered a copy of open fire! Is this compatible with this new 3rd edition? Or should I have bought Achtung! ?

Sorry to disappoint You, but no, they are not really compatible. V3 has new rules and point costs in the Forces book, which comes with Achtung! have changed. You can still use the models though - or if You can You should try to contact the seller and try to work this out.

Battlefront issued the new v3 book to all sellers to replace the one in Open Fire! free of charge, so you should have been given a copy of the new rulebook.

IIRC their offer was extended to those owning the hard-cover v2 rulebook only.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge here, but is Battlefront the company making the game, or what? :-)
I have to contact my store and look for help!

Yes, Battlefront are the authors of the Flames of War, including the ruleset. A couple of months ago they made a statement that anyone who would come to the local wargame store, which is the BF dealer, will get a sticker in their old version 2.0 hardcover rulebook and a free smallsize softcover version 3.0 rulebook for free. They made tons of these small rulebooks and eventually all major internet players - like Maelstrom and Wayland gave them away for free as well - all You had to do was to order one BF product from them (like a cheap HQ blister for 6 USD). Now they are putting those small rulebooks in Achtung! Be aware - they have some binding issues.

Well our LGS gave my friend and I a copy with our Open Fire! sets. Maybe it was just our store being a BF dealer.
