I am building a space wolf army and I am wanting to figure out a way to do fire bases on some guys and ice bases on some guys... While keeping the integrity of a single army look. Is it possible? How? This is what I was thinking ATM... A display board that was ice on one side and fire/lava on the other. Somehow build a portal or something in the middle to make it look like you pass through the portal into the othe region. Some ideas would have terrain that crosses the line and is one element on one side and the other on its opposing side. As far as a display board tying the army together I can do... But when the army is on the table it might look like 2 different armies. Would you mark down on theme or paint score if that was the case?

Well...
You could theme the packs themselves...
Since packs are recruited together they'd have been recruited at around the same time (Age of Fire or Age of Ice) soif you have a Blood Claw packrecruited around the Age of Fire you could theme the bases to fit.
You could also paint the models themselves to fit this...
So darker skin, maybe less hair, no facial hair, more reds and yellows...
Things like that.
A Wolfguard pack would be ahrder to do this with though since they aren't necessarily recruited together...

My list is predominately grey hunters atm, and I hink they are chosen as individuals. Anywho, I would have the entire squad using the same type base. My biggest concern is will opponents count off or mark down my theme/painting score in the department of cohesiveness (spelling) when i put them on the table away from the display board.

volcanic ice world, terrain changes from one side to the other of the board from ice and snow and rock to lava and rock.

Google "iceland volcano ice" and you should get some ideas.
