Hi folks,

So it's been a while since I posted anything. I'm just starting out after a wee hiatus. So here's my recently finished Emperor's Champion for part of my Command Squad.
Sorry for some of the slightly blurry pictures. It was a lot of fun painting this guy, unfortunately some of the red's haven't come out quite right in the photos. But I'm pleased
As usual, if you have any tips, shout out!

I'm hoping it's just the light source haha. I'll try and get some better photos once I have the Command Squad finished off

i have a couple points of interest / constructive criticism:
# the golden handle on the sword doenst appear to be highlighted
# the shading and highlighting on the loincloth and cape could have been a bit better / more extreme
# the bone doenst have real shading, just highlights (there are no darker shadow area's)
# the powersword, idk what you where going for, but if it was a lightning effect, try using paint that has been watered down more, and dont go for a single solid covering line, but build up the lightning so it will appear to be thinner with highlights in the center and on the edges
# since the color of the armor is red and bonewhite, i would have chosen a different color for the cloth and the cape

now for the positive feedback:
# i really, really like that color scheme... the good thing with a light color scheme like that is that you can do some really nice battle dmg and detailing on it....
# i like the pose, looking up to the tip of his sword
# nice writing on the shield, i hate it to write on small surfaces because it never comes out the way i want it to

one last thing, i dont see any chapter iconology... no squad markings no embems or campaigne badges.... this could really bring a character to life!

Thanks,

Upon reflection today I too agree that I 'missed' the hilt of the sword. It needs some more work.

The Power Sword lightning was built up with several layers of green but I agree, the desired effect hasn't really been achieved here.

THe colours on the cape are better IRL, some better camera work would show that BUT highlighting cloth is a particular problem area of mine and it can no doubt be improved anyway!

Thanks for your tips, I'll try and shade the armour a bit more next time too.

Cheers.

Looks good IMO. Does look pink though :p hope it is just the lighting keep up the good work.

Pink! You lot are a cheeky bunch!

Hmm maybe it's the way I do my reds...

Vallejo Scarlet Red (I think that's the name off top of my head)
Wash with Baal Red
Drybrush Vallejo Bloody Red for Highlight.

Maybe I'll go back to Citadel Scab Red as the base coat while I still can!!

Not the head I would have chosen personally (Womble head+gorget=very restricted movement) but the rest is nice, although the sword could do with a bit of a touch up.

well the sword hilt can be easily fixed.
for the powersword, try to use finer streaks with thinned paint with white, but you can be a little more generous with deep greens...
like:
basecoat with orkhide shade (dont know the new colors yet sorry )
a slightly thinned layer of dark angels green or equivalent (snot green)
a heavy wash of thrakka green
repaint one half of the blade (left or right, not top or bottom to reduce the horror to wet blending ) with DA green, and do the same with the other side of the blade
then stipple goblin green roughly in the pattern you want your lighning to have (stippling done with thinned down goblin green, with the excess wiped off on a paper towel or something)
then use thinned down scorpion green (1/1 paint/water) to paint a lightning pattern LINK and really keep it to thin streaks with your brush. dont go for a single covering paintjob, you need to build it up.
then add a few streaks of thinned down 1/1 white paint... and layer it up a bit in the middle, in corners and at the tip of the sword, you dont have to cover all the snot green with white

as for the cloth, try to avoid drybrushing. use a nice dark basecolor (like a 50/50 mix of red and black or brown) and start adding drops of red to that mix. keep the deep folds in the cloth dark and layer up the lighter colors towards the higher parts and the bottom of the cloth. finish with adding a few drops of bleached bone for the final highlights and use baal red wash to tie it all together...

but because red is already a dominant color in your mini, i think a dark green or shadow gray cape will make it stand out even more!

scab red is a nice color, but you can use vallejo heavy red (extra opaque) ad a nice basecoat and use a heavy wash to tone it down. then use your scarlet red to paint the places where the light would hit and finish with an edge highlight of bloody red. again, try to avoid drybrushing.

i hope these tips help you!

Right that's it, going back to Scab Red immediately and heavier washes haha.

Re: The Head
Indeed - it's an odd choice with the gorget. Even I know that, but I'm going for an avian/bird like theme so all my officers have some sort of beaky/winged helm. That's the plan anyway!

And DijnsK, thanks for all those tips, I'll try out some of them on the next mini =)

Excellent color scheme, it is getting to the pink end of the red spectrum, but it is definitely still red. I honestly prefer this red with the bone white as opposed to a blood red. Blood red is way overdone and too bright in my opinion, the matte red looks better and your gold/bronze that you used for the exposed armor and sword hilt gives him enough shine.
