I was playing a small game the other night. I had my Chaos Lord with Wings joined to a squad of Noise Marines who were closing in to charge some Tactical Space Marines. I wanted to detach my Lord at the beginning of the Movement Phase, and move him 12 inches to give him a slightly better position. My friend (who was spectating) said, "I don't think you can do that, because he was joined to the squad at the beginning of the movement phase- so while you would be able to leave the squad by moving 2+ inches away you are still limited to the squads movement since you must move at the rate of the slowest model in the squad, In this case 6 inches. I think it was in an FAQ or something." I didn't really contest his call, since it was only my 3rd game with Chaos, and since the Noise Marine Squad was in charge range anyway it didn't really matter much. But for future reference I would like to know how this works exactly, I skimmed the codex, rulebook, and most recent FAQs for both of those but didn't really see anything probative on the issue. to summarize the issue: "Can a Chaos Lord take advantage of his Wings if the turn begins with him attached to a squad which is slower?"

You will find people that say yes, you will find people that say no.
Talk it over with your group and play it how you want to, because the rules are not 100% clear due to the wording on P. 48 that says "When an independent character is part of a unit, he must obey the usual coherency rules. The combined unit moves and assaults at the speed of the slowest model while they stay together."

I wish I had the rulebook with me but I'm fairly certain the rule about moving at the pace of the slowest member of the unit doesn't apply when you're leaving the unit.

Despite the fact someone is going to argue my point, here I go:
1) Units move at the speed of the slowest model.
2) IYou do not check coherency with an IC until the end of the Movement phase.
Therefore, until after the Movement phase when an IC leaves, he can still only move as fast as the slowest model.
Note, however, INAT has rules the opposite, in that a models may use his faster movement option when he leaves. Coincidently this is also how my group plays.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Can anyone please quote the relevant rule section of how an independant character leaves a unit?

We could, but we try not to quote rules in this forum (although it does happen quite a bit).
